“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:
August 4: Dominik, Maria, Mironieg
August 5: Emil, Maria, Stanisława
August 6: Jakub, Sława, Stefan, Wincenty
August 7: Anna, Dobiemir, Donata, Dorota, Kajetan
August 8: Cyprian, Cyryl, Emil, Emilian, Emiliusz
August 9: Jan, Klarysa, Miłorad, Roman
August 10: Bogdan, Borys
August 11: Aleksander, Włodzimierz, Włodziwoj, Zula, Zuzanna

OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

THE KAPLICZKA: The new kapliczka (elaborately carved, traditional roadside shrine), blessed last Sunday following Mass, was burned to the ground early Thursday morning. We are saddened. The shrine was more than beautiful public art. It meant a lot to us spiritually and culturally, and the blessing by Father Paul and by Father Roman Dusanowskyj was a memorable and special moment. Let’s pray that the person(s) who did this will come forward so that we can begin a process of restorative justice and forgiveness. This project brought many people and organizations together: The Sydney Architectural Conservation Society, which sponsored and commissioned the project, master-craftsman Liam Tromans, Avery Tromans who worked on the structure, our parish, our friends from Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church, Krista Ann Starzomski’s art students at Whitney Pier Memorial Junior High, as well as neighbours and area residents. That co-operation and the commitment to be of service will not be lost. We’re resilient – and so is all of Whitney Pier, a great community. There has been tremendous goodwill and support since news of this broke – and there is a commitment to continue with the project and re-build. The words “Peace be with you” were carved into the shrine. May those words ring true.
Because of what happened, our choir director, Mary Pierrynowski, has selected  Ze wzgórz Częstochowy as our closing hymn. Our Lady of Czestochowa was exquisitely carved within the shrine, and this hymn speaks to how the Polish people have placed their faith in her through good times and bad over the course of centuries.

POPE FRANCIS ANNOUNCES THAT NEXT WORLD YOUTH DAY TO BE IN KRAKOW, POLAND: This will be in 2016. World Youth Days are unforgettable experiences that bring millions of people from around the world to renew, discuss, and celebrate their faith. There may be a special role for us in helping to prepare young people to attend – such as sharing some of the Polish customs and hymns, and perhaps linking youth from other parishes in the area with some of our relatives in Poland who could serve as guides.

“Dear friends, let us bring to Christ’s Cross our joys, our sufferings and our failures. There we will find a Heart that is open to us and understands us, forgives us, loves us and calls us to bear this love in our lives, to love each person, each brother and sister, with the same love.”
-Pope Francis in Rio de Janeiro, July 26, 2013

PLEASE MARK THE FOLLOWING PARISH CENTENARY EVENTS ON YOUR CALENDAR:
Family Reunion, including get-togethers for the whole parish community – August 2-4
Main Centenary Mass and Polish Festival – September 8
Other events are described on our website – www.stmaryspolishparish.ca. A full schedule of upcoming centenary events was printed in last week’s bulletin.

WHY AUGUST 1st IS A NATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE IN POLAND: Sixty-nine years ago, the Warsaw uprising saw the population of the Polish capital rise up against Nazi oppression.     For the next two months, the Poles desperately held much of the city. Hundreds of thousands of people died. When the Germans retook control, they captured or expelled the city’s civilian population and began leveling to the ground most of the city. Most of today’s “old” buildings in Warsaw are in fact replicas/reconstructions, part of the people’s determination to recreate the soul of the city. Last year, Pope Benedict said this (in Polish) about the Warsaw uprising: “Zawierzając wszystko Bogu, jak powstańcy warszawscy, trwając w jedności z Chrystusem, nie zbłądzicie w codziennych wyborach wartości, nawet gdy świat będzie was kusił mirażami szczęścia i rozrywki. Niech będzie pochwalony Jezus Chrystus!” "Entrust everything to God, as did the people of Warsaw in the Warsaw uprising, being united with Christ. Do not err in your daily choices, even when the world may tempt you with mirages of happiness and pleasure. Praised be Jesus Christ!"
