OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

POKÓJ Z WAMI! PEACE BE WITH YOU! Thank you, God, for the blessing of our parish community – for the dedication, the love without distinction, the generosity, the hospitality, and for a commitment to not leave anyone behind. Thank you, friends, for letting the Holy Spirit into our church and for all we have gone through together as a community. Thank you for the perseverance of the previous generations and for the hope of future generations. Help us to grow deeper in love, in welcome, in kindness, and in justice in a world that is hurting and in times that are troubled. Matko Boża Częstochowska, módl się za nami!

AT THE END OF MASS TODAY: Blessing of the Twin City Pocket Park at Victoria Road and Franklin Street. We’re all requested to proceed there and then LUNCH/CAFÉ at the Polish Village Hall, with some reflections and cultural presentations. No charge. Please join us there.

FRIENDS IN THE BROADER COMMUNITY HAVE RECENTLY PASSED ALONG warm best wishes for our 110th anniversary, including organizations we have been collaborating with and supporting as a parish: Howard House, Ally Centre, Whitney Pier Youth Club, Father Greg MacLeod House, KAIROS, Pathways to Employment.

STO LAT! Wszystkiego najlepszego and many blessings to Steve Sokolowski on the occasion of his birthday (this coming Friday). Steve has recently made the transition from hospital to the Cove, Room 123 and is settling in well. He welcomes visitors. (Steve has no surviving family members, and our parish is essentially his extended family.) Or if anyone would like to pass along a card to Steve, Marjorie, Bernie P. or Tom would be happy to take it to Steve.

SUNRISE PRAYERS: Additional copies of our sunrise prayers for peace that we held at dawn on September 1 are available at the back of the church.

SOME IMPORTANT UPCOMING ACTIVITIES: Later today, our Polish take-out dinner tickets go on sale $15 each for September 29 (11:00am - 1:00pm) at our church in support of the work of the parish. Please note there will be no ticket sales at the door.

The Coast is generously redirecting the sponsorships back to the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society (which produces the segments), which has been a big help to the Society. FATHER RICH’S COLUMN: Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Mary's! It is with great joy that we celebrate the 110th anniversary of our founding in 1913. Polish Catholics began settling in the Whitney Pier area of Sydney several years earlier. Sacramental record books from Holy Redeemer Parish show a number of baptisms, marriages and burials of Poles beginning in the first decade of the century. Preceding the formation of the parish was the establishment of the Brotherhood of St. Michael (Polish Benefit Society) that initially included Ukrainian Greek Catholics. The first priest and founding pastor was Fr. Antoni Płuciński. Our parents, grandparents and great grandparents over the years have supported this church that reflected their devotion to the Catholic faith together with the unique customs and traditions they brought with them, from their ancestors, to Canada. Today, many of those descended from our pioneer founders can be found in Halifax, Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary and many other cities across Canada and even the United States and other countries such as Australia. We have been blessed and protected in recent years from closure or merger, recovered and allowed to rebuild after a devastating fire that completely destroyed our original building. There is much to be grateful to God for. We now focus on our future and how we can move forward for years to come. May God grant eternal rest and happiness and peace to all those who have preceded us in faith. May God grant them reward for their dedication and hard labour in striving to build up the Kingdom of God and preserving and promoting the Polish Catholic heritage through the years. We are most grateful for the presence of our Bishop of Antigonish, Bishop Wayne Joseph Kirkpatrick, who despite his busy schedule found time to be with us and preside at our Mass this Sunday. I thank our Parish Rada (Council), Finance Committee, Altar Society, St. Cecilia Choir, St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society, organist, ushers, lectors, catechist, altar servers, decorators, visitors, care group, volunteers who work on events and outreach and food preparation, and all members of our parish family together with former parishioners, friends and benefactors for their service and support. Serdeczne Bóg Zapłać! May God reward you all! – Fr. Rich.
