OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

MATKA BOSKA ZIELNA: THE FEAST DAY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF MARY (this Sunday, August 15) is also called Matka Boska Zielna (Our Lady of the Herbs) in the Polish tradition. Fresh produce, flowers, and herbs are blessed on this day. Thank you to everyone who was able to bring some fresh vegetables, fruits, herbs, or flowers to place in baskets that will be in front of the altar. As in previous years, the produce will be donated to Loaves and Fishes. Some of the produce from our parish food garden will also be placed in the baskets. In many parts of rural Poland, some of the blessed flowers and herbs are taken home to place near a doorway as a symbol of our prayers for the home and for everyone who lives there.

STO LAT! Wishing many blessings to Jancia LaRusic on her birthday (Aug. 15)! Wishing many blessings to Sophie O’Toole on her birthday (Aug. 17)! Wszystkiego najlepszego!

BOTTLES AND CANS COLLECTION FOR UKRAINIAN HUMANITARIAN RELIEF EFFORTS: In support of our Ukrainian humanitarian relief efforts, Marjorie Ardelli and Paul MacKinnon are very kindly continuing to collect recyclable bottles. They would welcome any redeemable bottles. Thanks to fellow parishioners for recent contributions of bottles and cans, including Father Rich, Stephanie, Wayne, Sophie, Mike. Our parish has been supporting sister city Walbrzych’s Ukrainian relief efforts, plus the Catholic Near East Welfare Association and the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace.

NOVA SCOTIA POLISH HERITAGE MONTH PREPARATIONS: We are looking at quite a few activities for the Month. Among the highlights will be our parish’s 110th anniversary Mass on September 10, our parish retreat on September 23 in Gabarus (where the unveiling of the Copernicus 550th birthday sundial will take place the same day), the Pogoria featured artist exhibit (Sept 8-10), and more. We’re also putting out a call to volunteers. We would like to do a parish Polish take-out meal on Friday, September 29. Tickets (fixed number) would be pre-sold to manage and space out the process. We would be so grateful for any help, including pierogi preparation in advance.

BISHOP WAYNE KIRKPATRICK WILL JOIN US ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 to help mark our 110th anniversary. This is the Sunday closest to our parish feast day. We will start Mass later than usual on that day 11:00am. After Mass, we will process to the Twin City Pocket Park for its opening! We will then have a Polish Café at the Polish Village Hall. It will be potluck style, so we would be so grateful to anyone who can bring a dish to share.

NOVA SCOTIA POLISH HERITAGE MONTH ACTIVITIES FOR NEXT MONTH (SEPTEMBER): Things are shaping up to be very positive. The theme this year is Copernicus 550. In collaboration with the Glace Bay Library there will even be a “birthday party” for Copernicus (Mikołaj Kopernik) with a colouring contest and activities related to astronomy. We’ll be doing a film screening of the recent acclaimed Polish film “EO”. Pogoria Polish Folk Ensemble (marking its 20th anniversary) will be our featured artist this year. And much more. It will all start at dawn on September 1st here at St. Mary’s Polish Church as we gather to pray for peace on the solemn anniversary of the invasion of Poland and the start of World War II.

FOOD CUPBOARD: Please consider bringing a non-perishable food or personal care item (e.g. shampoo, soap, toilet paper) to church when you come to Mass. There is a collection box at the entrance to the church. We try to fill the Food Cupboard after each Sunday Mass. Thank you so much!

OUR POLISH-THEMED RADIO SEGMENTS: The Coast Radio 89.7 (weekdays at 3:50pm and 7:50pm or any time at coastalradio.ca). This coming week's topic will be the collaboration with public libraries in advance of Nova Scotia Polish Heritage Month, including purchase of new resources for all of the library regions related to Copernicus. Thank you to Juliette MacLeod for lending her voice this week. This week’s segment will be dedicated to Jancia LaRusic on the occasion of her birthday.
We’re always looking for sponsors and volunteers. It’s $100 for a whole week. Sponsors are recognized on air – and any dedications, too (eg. if you’re sponsoring as a memorial or as a birthday or anniversary gift). The Coast is generously redirecting the sponsorships back to the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society (which produces the segments), which has been a big help to the Society. If you think you might like to sponsor a week, please e-mail tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca or call 563-1226. Many thanks!

POGORIA POLISH FOLK ENSEMBLE: Practice/meeting this week will happen on Tuesday evening

A NOTE THIS WEEK FROM POPE FRANCIS: “While in Ukraine and other places in the world there is fighting, World Youth Day showed everyone that another world is possible, a world of brothers and sisters, where the flags of all peoples fly together, without hatred, without fear, without closure, without weapons!”

FEAST DAY: Tomorrow is the feast day of St. Maksymilian Kolbe, the Polish saint who gave his life to save the life of another prisoner at the Auschwitz Nazi death camp in German-occupied Poland during World War II. At tomorrow (Monday) morning’s Mass at 9:00am there will be prayers for all the victims of Auschwitz
