OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

STO LAT! Birthday blessings to Roddie O’Toole and also to Mike Morykot! All the very best to both of you. Wishing you health and happiness.

FEAST OF MATKA BOSKA ZIELNA / BLESSING OF HERBS, FLOWERS, FRUITS AND VEGETABLES: In two weeks after Mass on August 13th (closest Sunday to the Feast day). We will also be able to harvest some items from our parish food garden. We invite everyone to bring fresh produce. We will give the fresh produce to Loaves and Fishes to help neighbours in need, and also hopefully to some folks who were relying on the Whitney Pier Food Pantry, which recently closed (it was operating out of the Seniors’ and Pensioners’ Club building).

THANK YOU LETTERS TO OUR PARISH: Our parish received some very kind notes and letters from the Whitney Pier Youth Club, Howard House, Pathways to Employment, and St. Alban’s Anglican Church (roof project) to acknowledge how much of a difference our recent support made from our Christian Service and Outreach budget line. Some of these notes are pinned to the parish bulletin board near the main entrance.

BOTTLES AND CANS COLLECTION FOR UKRAINIAN HUMANITARIAN RELIEF EFFORTS: In support of our Ukrainian humanitarian relief efforts, Marjorie Ardelli and Paul MacKinnon are very kindly continuing to collect recyclable bottles. They would welcome any redeemable bottles. Thanks to fellow parishioners for recent contributions of bottles and cans, including Father Rich, Stephanie, Wayne, Sophie, Mike. Our parish has been supporting sister city Walbrzych’s Ukrainian relief efforts, plus the Catholic Near East Welfare Association and the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace.

NOVA SCOTIA POLISH HERITAGE MONTH PREPARATIONS: We are looking at quite a few activities for the Month. Among the highlights will be our parish’s 110th anniversary Mass on September 10, our parish retreat on September 23 in Gabarus (where the unveiling of the Copernicus 550th birthday sundial will take place the same day), the Pogoria featured artist exhibit. We’re also putting out a call to volunteers. We would like to do a parish Polish take-out meal on Friday, September 29. Tickets (fixed number) would be pre-sold to manage and space out the process. We would be so grateful for any help, including pierogi preparation in advance.

BISHOP WAYNE KIRKPATRICK WILL JOIN US ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 to help mark our 110th anniversary. This is the Sunday closest to our parish feast day. We will start Mass later than usual on that day 11:00am. After Mass, we will process to the Twin City Pocket Park for its opening! We will then have a Polish Café at the Polish Village Hall. It will be potluck style, so we would be so grateful to anyone who can bring a dish to share.

LOOKING OVER SOME DRAFT EXHIBIT PANELS: The Beaton Institute has drafted some exhibit panels with archival photos for an eventual mobile Polonia welcome exhibit at the Polish Village Hall. These are rough drafts at this point, but feedback is very welcome. We are trying to arrange a little session for August 9 or 10 to look at and talk about the drafts at the Beaton Institute. If you would like to be included, you would be most welcomed. Please let Tom Urbaniak know.

FOOD CUPBOARD: Please consider bringing a non-perishable food or personal care item (e.g. shampoo, soap, toilet paper) to church when you come to Mass. There is a collection box at the entrance to the church. We try to fill the Food Cupboard after each Sunday Mass. Thank you so much!

OUR POLISH-THEMED RADIO SEGMENTS: The Coast Radio 89.7 (weekdays at 3:50pm and 7:50pm or any time at coastalradio.ca). This coming week's topic will be “Ptasie mleczko” Polish marshmallow chocolates. Many thanks to this week’s guest Stephanie Black and to Carl Wrobleski, this week’s sponsor.
We’re always looking for sponsors and volunteers. It’s $100 for a whole week. Sponsors are recognized on air – and any dedications, too (eg. if you’re sponsoring as a memorial or as a birthday or anniversary gift). The Coast is generously redirecting the sponsorships back to the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society (which produces the segments), which has been a big help to the Society. If you think you might like to sponsor a week, please e-mail tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca or call 563-1226. Many thanks!

POGORIA POLISH FOLK ENSEMBLE: Practice/meeting after Mass today in the Polish Village Hall.

COLLECTION FOR JULY 23: $730.00. Sincere thanks! Bόg zapłać!

THANKS VERY KINDLY FOR YOUR DONATIONS TO OUR PARISH : Donations may be made during weekly Sunday Mass collection. Also, please feel free to use the mail: St. Mary’s Polish Parish, 21 Wesley St., Sydney, NS, B1N 2M5. Donations can also be made securely on-line at Canada Helps (which will email you an instant tax receipt):   https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/st-marys-polish-parish/. (link to this site is provided on our parish website homepage). Thanks for your support!

FATHER RICH’S COLUMN: Next Saturday we will have the blessing of the marriage of Wojciech Mic ( a young man from the area of Jawor - Legnica, Poland) and Katie Lowe at Mass at 2:00pm. There will be some family from Poland. I would like to ask St. Cecelia Choir members who are available to sing Polish Mass parts and hymn at the Mass. Bishop Kirkpatrick has confirmed not only his presence at the 110th Anniversary Mass on September 10th, but also will come back for First Communion Mass and possibly Confirmation on Sunday, October 29th at 11:00am. The month of August is very much a Marian month with pilgrimages to many shrines around the world. The Solemnity of the Assumption will be observed on Tuesday, August 15th with a special Mass at 6:30pm and with an outdoor (candlelight) procession if weather permits to the grotto. Have a blessed week!

WORKING ON THIS YEAR’S RECOMMENDED BOOKS POSTER FOR N.S. POLISH HERITAGE MONTH
Similar to last year, a poster will be issued this year with 30 recommended books for NS Polish Heritage Month – different genres, different age audiences, and both fiction and non-fiction – books of interest to a broad public. Since this year’s theme is “Copernicus 550” some of the recommendations should broadly reflect that theme. Here is an early draft. Additions or changes are encouraged and much appreciated. The books should be by Polish, Polish Canadian, or Polish Nova Scotian authors.

*Indicates Polish Canadian
**Indicates Polish Nova Scotian

-Nicolaus Copernicus, On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres (Concise edition edited by Marika Taylor, being released in September)
-Andrzej Sapkowski, Time of Contempt
-Zofia Nałkowska, Choucas
-Miron Bialoszewski, A Memoir of the Warsaw Uprising
-Leonard Pluta and Santo Dodaro, The Big Picture: The Antigonish Movement of Eastern Nova Scotia **
-Frederic Chopin and E.L. Voynich, Chopin's Letters
-Dover Music for Piano, Polish Piano Music: Works by Paderewski, Scharwenka, Moszkowski and Szymanowski

-Eva Stachniak, Necessary Lies *
-Stanisław Lem, The Star Diaries
-Julian Tuwim, Mr. Miniscule and the Whale

-Joseph Rotblat and Daisaku Ikeda, A Quest for Global Peace
-Peter Gzowski, The Sacrament *
-John Radzilowski, A Traveller's History of Poland
-Olga Tokarczuk, The Books of Jacob
-Jan Karski, The Great Powers and Poland: From Versailles to Yalta
-Last year, our poster recommended two books for translation. If we do the same this year, the following are two possible titles:
-Joanna Bator, Ciemno, Prawie Noc. (Joanna Bator is a famous Polish author from Walbrzych. She's been widely translated but not much in English. This novel is set in Walbrzych and surrounding region. )
-Wojciech Orliński, Kopernik Rewolucje. (This 2022 book is a lively biography/travelogue/detective hunt -- very accessible. I haven't seen anything like it in English about Copernicus.)

Życzymy błogosławionego tygodnia / Wishing you a blessed week!
