OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

SMALL GIFT: Recognizing that in the Polish tradition Pentecost Week is also known as Zielone Świątki -- the “Green Holidays” -- we would like to offer everyone some garden seeds as a small gift. They are in baskets at the entrance to the church. You will also notice some extra greenery on the side altar.

STO LAT! Wishing many blessings to Bernie LaRusic on his birthday (May 29) and extending many thanks to him!

UNVEILING OF BENCH: Next Sunday after Mass, we will have the unveiling of a bench in the Twin City Pocket Park (Victoria Road and Franklin St, one block from the church), in memory of Jack, the great grandson of Peggy Ryba, who passed away when he was just a few days old.

PARISH LUNCH FOLLOWING THE MASS AND BLESSING NEXT SUNDAY in Sala 1050. Sincere gratitude to anyone who can bring a dish to share.

POLISH CAFE: On Monday, June 5, at 11:00am (until 1:00pm), we will have a Polish Café at the Polish Village Hall with a fun language session “Polish Hospitality for Beginners.” It will also be an opportunity for students who will be going to CBU’s summer school in Walbrzych to meet members of our local Polish community. We’re looking for a few volunteers who might be willing to make open-face sandwiches or a Polish desert for the Polish Café on Monday, June 5. (We can offer a small gift of gratitude to anyone who can assist with this – a free copy of a new book – part of the Tompkins Institute series -- that is being released at the café to be given to students – and volunteers. The book includes, among other things, essays on Polonia-related topics, Cape Breton community development, and the church and community development. The book is called In the Public Square: A Citizen’s Reader.

A NOTE FROM FATHER RICH: This Sunday (May 28) there will be a catechism class for our children preparing for their First Sacraments (First Holy Communion and Penance). In my absence, Marjorie Ardelli will conduct the class and be assisted by James Clarke, who will prepare some video clips for children that is related to the assigned topic texts. The class will be held after Mass in Sala 1050.

HOUSING CHALLENGES IN OUR COMMUNITY: Recruiting a core of volunteers from local churches for a time-limited volunteer pilot project to accompany students in their meetings with landlords. Please speak with Tom Urbaniak (tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca).

POGORIA POLISH FOLK ENSEMBLE: Meeting/rehearsal after Mass in the Polish Village Hall.

2023-2024 MEMBERSHIP IN THE ST. MICHAEL’S POLISH BENEFIT SOCIETY: A warm welcome to join the Society. Membership is $30 per year and is open to anyone with an interest in Polish culture and heritage in Cape Breton. Only members elected to the board have to attend monthly meetings. Other members participate in projects, meetings and activities as they wish or are able. A membership form is attached

FUND-RAISING FOR UKRAINIAN HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE: We are using all the funds raised to support three charities that are directly helping refugees and displaced people either within Ukraine itself or who have fled to Poland. Our largest chunk of support has been going to our sister city Wałbrzych’s Ukrainian refugee assistance fund (via the CBRM). We are also supporting Caritas efforts on the ground (via the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace) and the Catholic Near East Welfare Association. We have special envelopes (marked “Ukrainian Humanitarian Assistance”) at the back of the church if you are considering making a contribution. Thank you for your support in the midst of all the suffering caused by this terrible invasion.

VEHICLE PLATES: Cape Breton Polonia and Nova Scotia Polonia front vehicle plates are still available at the back of the church. $25.00 each

FOOD CUPBOARD: Please consider bringing a non-perishable food or personal care item (e.g. shampoo, soap, toilet paper) to church when you come to Mass. There is a collection box at the entrance to the church. We try to fill the Food Cupboard after each Sunday Mass. Thank you so much!

OUR POLISH-THEMED RADIO SEGMENTS: The Coast Radio 89.7 (weekdays at 3:50pm and 7:50pm or any time at coastalradio.ca). This coming week's topic will be Polish Hospitality – and our upcoming cafe/workshop (June 5). Thank you to Stephanie Black for lending her voice to this segment. This week’s segment is sponsored by Julie Bennett in memory of her parents, John and Nellie Tynski who would be marking their 69th wedding anniversary
We’re always looking for sponsors and volunteers. It’s $100 for a whole week. Sponsors are recognized on air – and any dedications, too (eg. if you’re sponsoring as a memorial or as a birthday or anniversary gift). The Coast is generously redirecting the sponsorships back to the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society (which produces the segments), which has been a big help to the Society. If you think you might like to sponsor a week, please e-mail tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca or call 563-1226. Many thanks!
