OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

HEARTFELT CONDOLENCES from our parish to Bernie Kokoszka and his family on the passing of Bernie’s sister Adele Kokoszka Young. Wieczny odpoczynek racz jej dać Panie

FREE POLISH CAFE: This Tuesday, May 2, at 1:00pm Free Polish Café to mark World Polonia Day, Polish Village Hall. Everyone welcome. Please invite family and friends. If anyone can bring a dish to the café, we would be so grateful. At the café, students from Whitney Pier Memorial Middle School will present their public art for the future Twin City Pocket Park. Thanks to their teacher, Krista Ann Starzomski. It would be wonderful if you could join us.

ZOOM LECTURE: Wednesday, May 3, at 8:00pm Feast Day of Mary Queen of Poland and Polish Constitution Day. We’re hosting a lecture on Zoom with the Polish American author Sophie Hodorowicz Knab. She has written excellent books on Polish folklore, traditions, customs, cuisine and places. Her latest book, Spirit of Place, is on Polish roadside shrines. Two of Sophie’s books will be given as a “door prize” at the end of the lecture. There will be time for Q & A. The lecture is dedicated to the memory of Steve Melnick, in gratitude for his outstanding service to the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society and the community.

You can join the session by computer or telephone. Here is a Zoom link:

HOUSING – KAIROS ECUMENICAL PROJECT: Our parish has been working with other churches in the area. Tomorrow (Monday) at 2:30pm, we are meeting with CBU on campus to try to set up a pilot “friends of renters” program where newcomers to the community (eg, new students) can get a volunteer to accompany them to a meeting with a prospective landlord and give them a little bit of advice afterwards. If you would like to be part of this meeting, you are most welcome. Please speak with Tom Urbaniak.

A NOTE ON PARISH LUNCH: Because we have the Polish Café on Tuesday, May 2, at 1:00pm at the Polish Village (for which we are kindly asking for any volunteers to bring a dish, if possible), and also because our Mass for Shut-ins will air shortly after our Mass in church next Sunday, we will skip lunch after Mass on Sunday, May 7. Many thanks for help and participation with our gatherings on May 2 and 3.

SINCERE THANKS: Thanks to everyone who brought a dish and helped out with last Sunday’s Święconka parish Easter brunch. We posted some photos on our parish Facebook page. Thanks to everyone who was at the taping of Mass for Shut-Ins on CTV. Really grateful to you for making the time.

ST. MICHAEL’S POLISH BENEFIT SOCIETY ZARZĄD (BOARD) MEETING at 7:00pm

FUND-RAISING FOR UKRAINIAN HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE: We are using all the funds raised to support three charities that are directly helping refugees and displaced people either within Ukraine itself or who have fled to Poland. Our largest chunk of support has been going to our sister city Wałbrzych’s Ukrainian refugee assistance fund (via the CBRM). We are also supporting Caritas efforts on the ground (via the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace) and the Catholic Near East Welfare Association. We have special envelopes (marked “Ukrainian Humanitarian Assistance”) at the back of the church if you are considering making a contribution. Thank you for your support in the midst of all the suffering caused by this terrible invasion.

VEHICLE PLATES: Cape Breton Polonia and Nova Scotia Polonia front vehicle plates are still available at the back of the church. $25.00 each

FOOD CUPBOARD: Please consider bringing a non-perishable food or personal care item (e.g. shampoo, soap, toilet paper) to church when you come to Mass. There is a collection box at the entrance to the church. We try to fill the Food Cupboard after each Sunday Mass. Thank you so much!

OUR POLISH-THEMED RADIO SEGMENTS: The Coast Radio 89.7 (weekdays at 3:50pm and 7:50pm or any time at coastalradio.ca). This coming week's topic will be about our May 3rd 8:00pm Zoom lecture. Guest lecturer Sophie Hodorowicz Knab herself will be the guest for this radio segment. We will be acknowledging that the lecture is dedicated to the memory of Steve Melnick.
We’re always looking for sponsors and volunteers. It’s $100 for a whole week. Sponsors are recognized on air – and any dedications, too (eg. if you’re sponsoring as a memorial or as a birthday or anniversary gift). The Coast is generously redirecting the sponsorships back to the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society (which produces the segments), which has been a big help to the Society. If you think you might like to sponsor a week, please e-mail tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca or call 563-1226. Many thanks!

UPDATE ON RESURRECTION CEMETERY: The Nova Scotia legislature’s Standing Committee on Private and Local Bills has stopped Bill 274, which would have problematically changed Resurrection Cemetery’s structure to exclude the parishes and the Catholic community from being entitled to a role or to information/voice in the cemetery. Both the diocese and local Catholics were concerned about the bill, though the next steps remain unclear.

PUBLIC HEALTH PROTOCOLS – MASKS ARE STILL RECOMMENDED. Thanks for all your kindness, patience, and co-operation.

COLLECTION FOR APRIL 23: $1135.00 including $170.00 for Ukrainian relief and $153.95 contributed during Divine Mercy Holy Hour. Thank you for your generosity to carry on the work of our parish and maintain our beautiful sacred space. Bόg zapłać!

THANKS VERY KINDLY FOR YOUR DONATIONS TO OUR PARISH : Donations may be made during weekly Sunday Mass collection. Also, please feel free to use the mail: St. Mary’s Polish Parish, 21 Wesley St., Sydney, NS, B1N 2M5. Donations can also be made securely on-line at Canada Helps (which will email you an instant tax receipt):   https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/st-marys-polish-parish/. (link to this site is provided on our parish website homepage). Thanks for your support!

FATHER RICH’S COLUMN: Many thanks to all our parishioners and friends who attended the Mass on Saturday taped for next Sunday, May 7th on CTV-Mass for Shut-Ins. Special thanks to readers, our altar server, choir and organist, our offertory gift bearers and all participants. Bόg Zapłać-May God reward you. This Fourth Sunday of Easter is known as Good Shepherd Sunday and the Holy Father and the Church has designated this Sunday to be a World Day of Prayer for Vocations. We ask the Lord to send us Good Shepherds (priests and deacons) and also religious sisters and lay brothers to serve God's people. The month of May is very much a Marian month and we will say or sing after Mass the Litany of Loretto through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Please pray for the soul of Adele Kokoszka Young (Bernie's sister) who died in Barrie, Ontario. Her funeral will take palce later this month in Glace Bay. Religious instruction (catechsim class) will begin today for a small group of three girls and two boys to prepare for their First Confessions and Communion in our parish which we hope to schedule in October, and, if possible, with the presence of Bishop Wayne Joseph Kirkpatrick our bishop of Antigonish. I would like to meet with our pilgrim travelers going to Poland this Friday after Mass in Sala 1050. Next week after Monday's Mass we will return to twice a week schedule of Masses (Sunday morning and Wednesday evening) as I will return to Las Vegas for several weeks. I hope to return the third week of June. Have a blessed week!
