Uroczystość Zesłania Ducha Świętego / Pentecost Sunday

TODAY’S MASS INTENTION is for Michael Ardelli offered by Shirley & family. Eternal rest grant onto him O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him. Wieczny odpoczynek racz Mu dać Panie, a swiatłość wiekuista niechaj Mu świeci na wieki wieków. Amen.

The Vigil Candle this week is for Michael Ardelli offered by Shirley & family.

Eucharistic Minister for today: Suzanne Campbell

Ushers for collection today: Michael Melski, Bernie LaRusic

Uroczystość Zesłania Ducha Świętego / Pentecost: Pentecost – literally the fiftieth day (after Easter) – marks the descent of the Holy Spirit among the apostles and other followers of Jesus. Typical church images of the Pentecost show the Virgin Mary seated with the apostles. On this day, we pray for wisdom, piety, and discernment, among other virtues. “Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your love.”  “Przyjdź, Duchu Święty, i zapal w nas płomień.”

“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:
May 19: Augustyn, Celestyn, Mikołaj, Pękosław, Piotr, Timur
May 20: Bronimir, Teodor, Wiktoria
May 21: Donata, Jan, Tymoteusz, Wiktor

OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

CONGRATULATIONS TO FATHER PAUL, who marks the 30th anniversary of his ordination as a priest on May 22nd. The parish extends sincerest best wishes and many blessings on this joyous occasion. Sto lat!

FROM THE PASTOR’S PEN: Before we know it our 100th anniversary of St. Mary’s Polish parish will be upon us. This is a true milestone in the history of our parish and one in which we should be truly proud. Let us especially give thanks for all those parishioners who contributed so much to the life of St. Mary’s and have gone to their Eternal reward. May we be worthy successors of these our loved ones. The Eucharist is the heart of any Catholic parish. Where and what would we be without the Holy Mass? On Sunday, June 2nd, at 3pm, St. Mary’s Polish Parish will be hosting a special Corpus Christi celebration. We will have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, readings, homily, Benediction and a procession. This being our anniversary year it would be encouraging to see a really good turnout for this special event. It was good to see and hear our Choir at the recent Pierscapes concert held at Holy Redeemer. As usual they were excellent and everyone enjoyed their choice of songs. And the recent dinner and social at the newly renovated St. Michael’s Polish centre was very enjoyable. The company was good and the dinner delicious! Have a great week and Bóg zapłać, Father Paul

PREPARING FOR CORPUS CHRISTI: There will be a short meeting after Mass today in front of the altar for anyone who would like to assist with preparation and decorating for the Corpus Christi celebration, coming up on Sunday, June 2nd. Dziękujemy!

SUNDAY, JUNE 2 (FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI) – A NOTE ON LUNCH PREPARATIONS: Our parish’s June lunch will take place not after Mass, but after our Corpus Christi celebration (which begins at 3 p.m.). The designated volunteers (to please bring a dish) are: Ursula and Michael Melski, Liz Melski, Tony Melski, Linda Morykot, Joan Mosher, Florence Paruch, Patricia Paruch, Stella Paruch, Rose and Albert Oursen, Mary Pierrynowski, Dorothy Rozeluk, Edmund and Maria Rudiuk, Lynette Ryba, Peggy Ryba, Catherine and Herb Tucker, Nellie Tynski

ALTAR SOCIETY SCHEDULE FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL MONTHS is on yellow sheets at the back of the church. Thank you to all the members who attended the meeting after Mass last Sunday.

TENDING TO OUR GROTTO: Anyone who can spare an hour or two tomorrow (May 20), please speak with Lynette Ryba. With May being the month of Mary and tomorrow being the Feast of Mary, Queen of the Church, we want to make sure that our grotto is ready for the new season. Many thanks!

Święto Najświętszej Maryi Panny Matki Kościoła/ Feast of Mary, Queen of the Church (May 20): This day was requested by the Polish bishops and formally announced by them in a pastoral letter in 1971, following approval by the Holy Father, Paul VI. In the actual request to the Holy See, dated 16 September 1964, Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński discussed the special place of Mary in the lives of the Polish people, a protector and guide through very difficult times, the one whose image and sacredness has ensured an especially close bond between Poland and the Church. Matko Kościoła, módl się za nami! Mother of the Church, pray for us!

FUND-RAISING PLANT/GARDEN SALE (to benefit the church and hall) – Saturday, June 8, starting at 8:30 a.m., Polish Village Hall: We would be grateful for donations of plants. If you would like free pots (for the donated plants), there are some downstairs after Mass today. If you can spare extra pots or other kinds of containers for plants, please bring them to the church (downstairs) next Sunday. Volunteers to help out with the sale would be much appreciated. Please speak with Catherine Tucker (567-0146).

OGRÓDEK (POLISH FOOD GARDEN): A suggestion was shared with the Rada that some parishioners are interested in having a small Polish garden (perhaps 4x8 feet to start) for food/herbs and some ornamentals, especially those common in Poland. This would be one of our service projects: some of the food would be for our parish meals and some could be donated to Loaves and Fishes for its meals. The Rada made some preliminary enquiries, and a couple of local organizations are interested in advising/assisting. We may be able to have the basic prep work (not planting) done in time for a blessing after the Corpus Christi celebration (June 2nd). Would you or any of your friends like to help? Do you have ideas for how it should look? Do you have some plant transplants that you could share? Please speak with any member of the Rada or call 563-1226. Thank you!

DESIGNING A CAPE BRETON POLISH TARTAN:  At the recent community supper, we distributed some possible design options. (Thanks so much to Jeff Wilson!) We’re looking for your votes or your critiques. If you have not received this handout, please speak with Jeff.

OUR DRAMATIC PRODUCTION OF THE ODYSSEY OF THE POLISH TREASURES: Josie Sobol has scheduled the next meeting for actors for Sunday, May 26, at 1:30 p.m. at the Polish Village Hall. It is not too late to be part of the play, even in a small role.  Please attend the meeting if you are interested or curious. The play, based on Prof. Al Balawyder’s book, will be performed on the evening of Saturday, July 27. It should be noted that Father Paul has kindly agreed to make an appearance in the play, as Father O’Connell!

THE MEN OF THE DEEPS WILL BE PERFORMING A CONCERT IN HONOUR OF OUR PARISH CENTENARY! It will take place on the evening of Saturday, July 6, 2013, at the Boardmore Playhouse, Cape Breton University, 8 p.m. The first batch of tickets will be available this week from Tony Melski. The event will be hosted by the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society. The Choir of St. Mary’s Polish Parish will be participating, and the evening will be interspersed with short stories about our founders and early immigrants. The Men of the Deeps will have songs appropriate for the occasion, and the Polish Consul General will present a commemorative Polish miner’s uniform.

CENTENARY ART EXHIBIT: NOTE TO PARISHIONERS AND FRIENDS OF THE PARISH: We are inviting all our visual artists of all ages working in all genres (painting, sketching, textiles, rugs, etc.) to display any work of a religious or Polish-cultural theme that you have prepared -- or may be willing to prepare -- at a special Centenary Art Exhibit. It will coincide with the conference of the Canadian Polish Research Institute, which is being held in Sydney because of our centenary. The opening reception will be at the Polish Village Hall on the evening of Thursday, July 25. We would very much like to show a wide range of work from our community. If you are interested in participating in any way or have any questions, please contact Frania McKay (539-4354; frania@ns.sympatico.ca).

PARISH CENTENARY HISTORICAL EXHIBIT ITEMS STILL BEING SOUGHT: Any clippings, photos, any artifacts or documents from you or your ancestors. These will be returned. Please contact Patricia Nalepa (ececp@hotmail.com; 563-1226).

PLEASE MARK THE FOLLOWING PARISH CENTENARY EVENTS ON YOUR CALENDAR:
Family Reunion, including get-togethers for the whole parish community – August 2-5
Main Centenary Mass and Polish Festival – September 8
Other events are described on our website – www.stmaryspolishparish.ca. There are various activities taking place in honour of our centenary.

PIER 21 EXHIBIT: The Odyssey of Wawel’s Treasures 1939-1961/ Odyseja Skarbów Wawelskich 1939-1961: Wawel, the Royal Castle in Krakow, Poland is home to numerous treasures accumulated by Polish monarchs over centuries. Szczerbiec, the medieval coronation sword; the Turkish banners from the battle of Vienna in 1683; precious tapestries and many other artifacts of enormous historic value are there. Until June 23, 2013 at the Pier 21 Museum, come discover The Odyssey of Wawel’s Treasures 1939-1961/Odyseja Skarbów Wawelskich 1939-1961, an exhibition that tells the story of how these treasures found their way to Canada for safekeeping and back to Poland. The exhibition is presented by the Consulate of the Republic of Poland in Nova Scotia in partnership with the “Pomorze” Polish Dance Ensemble. It is also an expression of gratitude from all the Poles to Canada for saving a huge part of their national heritage. The Consulate and the Museum hope the exhibition will increase awareness of Canada’s relations with Poland, as well as Polish culture in general.

Adult Religious Education series – ‘The Bible.’ A DVD series on the Bible, covering the Old Testament through the New Testament, will begin on Thursday, October 10th and run for ten evenings, 6:30pm, downstairs in Holy Redeemer Church. This series is very well done and very informative. A great way to learn the history of our Faith and its development. Last year’s series was extremely well attended each evening. So, mark your calendars and set aside your Thursday evenings and join us.

PLEASE CHECK OUT OUR ON-LINE “VIRTUAL TOUR” www.stmaryspolishparish.ca

Wishing you a blessed week! Bóg zapłać!
