OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

LAST WEEK: We marked the Feast Day of St. Maximilian Kolbe. St. Maximilian Kolbe (1894-1941) was a Polish priest active in the Catholic media and in missionary and charitable work. Interned in the Auschwitz Nazi concentration camp, he insisted on replacing a condemned prisoner who was being sent to his death in the starvation bunker. Father Kolbe, who had a strong devotion to Mary, was canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 10, 1982. Franciszek Gajowniczek, the condemned prisoner whose life Father Kolbe had saved, was present for the canonization.

FAREWELL BARBECUE FOR FATHER DENNIS: Today, Sunday, August 21, 12 noon to 2:00pm, St. Theresa’s Parish Hall. Our parish will be contributing to this. Everyone is warmly welcomed. We will make a special presentation from our parish to Father Dennis.

PRAYERS AND CONDOLENCES: Our parish will greatly miss Mike Petruskavich, whose funeral Mass was yesterday in our church, followed by a reception in our church. Mike was kind, humble, faithful, and wise. Wieczny odpoczynek racz Mu dać, Panie …

SHORT MEETING NEXT SUNDAY AFTER MASS: For anyone who can help with any aspect of preparing Polish take-out dinners for Sept. 24. We will keep the number of plates to 150, and all tickets will be sold in advance. At the meeting, we will schedule some days/times for preparation. Truly grateful to anyone who might be able to spare a few hours in the weeks ahead. New volunteers welcome.

PLEASE NOTE SOME UPCOMING DATES:
These are just a few upcoming events for NS Polish Heritage Month:
Thurs., Sept. 1: Sunrise – Short gathering of prayers for peace (parish grotto) –anniversary of invasion of Poland and start of WWII.
Sun., Sept. 11: After Mass: Blessing of the future Twin City Pocket Park / Polish Café – 109th anniversary of our parish.
Thurs., Sept. 15: Polish Village Hall, 6pm: Special tribute gathering/presentation -- the late Johnny Paruch
Sat., Sept. 24: Polish take-out dinners
Sun., Sept. 25: after Mass – St. Mary’s Polish Parish gathering at Father Greg MacLeod House – the group of students is kindly hosting us!
Thurs., Sept. 29: St. Michael’s Day (on-line lecture) – details to be announced. Also, recipe exchange at McConnell Library and presentation of NS Polish Heritage Month recommended books, sponsored in memory of Delores Starzomski.

UKRAINIAN HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE: Thank you for your continued support in the midst of this terrible human suffering. Our parish’s contributions now total more than $27,500. Special envelopes are at the back of the church. Or you can contribute via our CanadaHelps page. In previous weeks’ bulletins, we had a more detailed description of how our support is helping displaced people directly on the ground with basic aid

FOOD CUPBOARD: Please consider bringing a non-perishable food or personal care item (e.g. shampoo, soap, toilet paper) to church when you come to Mass. These items will help stock our food cupboard outside the Polish Village Hall. There is a significant need in our community. Thank you for any help.

OUR POLISH-THEMED RADIO SEGMENTS: The Coast Radio 89.7 (weekdays at 3:50pm and 7:50pm or any time at coastalradio.ca). This coming week's topic will be the Polish tradition of mushroom picking! Many thanks to Krista Ann Starzomski for being the guest and to Bobby MacLean of Aggressive Metal Fabricators (who is working with us on the Twin City Pocket Park), August sponsor of the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society.
We’re always looking for sponsors and volunteers. It’s $100 for a whole week. Sponsors are recognized on air – and any dedications, too (eg. if you’re sponsoring as a memorial or as a birthday or anniversary gift). The Coast is generously redirecting the sponsorships back to the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society (which produces the segments), which has been a big help to the Society. If you think you might like to sponsor a week, please e-mail tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca or call 563-1226. Many thanks!

PUBLIC HEALTH PROTOCOLS – MASKS ARE STILL STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. Thanks for all your kindness, patience, and co-operation through the pandemic.

DECORATIVE FRONT “POLONIA” (Cape Breton and Nova Scotia) VEHICLE PLATES: Thanks for your feedback last week. Based on the feedback, we’re going to add a version – red on white to the other options that we showed, all of which will be available. These will be unveiled and available during the upcoming Nova Scotia Polish Heritage Month (September).

DZIĘKUJEMY: Thank you for the wonderful fruits and vegetables that were blessed last week for Matka Boska Zielna. These were donated to Loaves and Fishes

COLLECTION FOR AUGUST 14: Info will be included with next week's bulletin. Many thanks, everyone, for your kindness and generosity!

THANKS VERY KINDLY FOR YOUR DONATIONS TO OUR PARISH : We are truly grateful for everyone’s generosity through the pandemic. If you are attending Mass, you will find a collection basket near the entrance and exit (since we are not passing around the basket due to the public health restrictions). Also, please free to use the mail: St. Mary’s Polish Parish, 21 Wesley St., Sydney, NS, B1N 2M5. Donations can also be made securely on-line at Canada Helps (which will email you an instant tax receipt):   https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/st-marys-polish-parish/. (link to this site is provided on our parish website homepage). Thanks for your support!
