OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

STO LAT! Wishing Shirley Ardelli many blessings on her birthday! Wishing Peggy Ryba many blessings on her birthday! Peggy’s and Shirley’s birthday is the same day – July 25, 1937. Wishing them lots of health and happiness in the years ahead. Peggy and Shirley, your fellow parishioners are truly grateful for all that you do and the friendship and kindness you show to everyone.

UKRAINIAN HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE: Thank you for your continued support in the midst of this terrible human suffering. Our parish’s contributions now total more than $27,500. Special envelopes are at the back of the church. Or you can contribute via our CanadaHelps page. In previous weeks’ bulletins, we had a more detailed description of how our support is helping displaced people directly on the ground with basic aid.

FOOD CUPBOARD: Please consider bringing a non-perishable food or personal care item (e.g. shampoo, soap, toilet paper) to church when you come to Mass. These items will help stock our food cupboard outside the Polish Village Hall. There is a significant need in our community. Thank you for any help.

THE GOOD FOOD BUS will be at the Polish Village Hall this coming Wednesday (July 27) from 3:00 to 4:00pm. This is like a mini farmers’ market on wheels, with very affordable prices. Everyone is welcome.

YOUTH CLUB: For the second summer in a row, the Polish Village Hall is being used weekdays by the Whitney Pier Youth Club (Boys and Girls Club). It’s a very good collaboration between both organizations. In the coming weeks, the youth will be doing some activities related to the Polish community.

OUR POLISH-THEMED RADIO SEGMENTS: The Coast Radio 89.7 (weekdays at 3:50pm and 7:50pm or any time at coastalradio.ca). This coming week's topic will be Gearing up for Nova Scotia Polish Heritage Month (September) . Many thanks to Sister Rose Tynski, this coming week’s sponsor of the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society.
We’re always looking for sponsors and volunteers. It’s $100 for a whole week. Sponsors are recognized on air – and any dedications, too (eg. if you’re sponsoring as a memorial or as a birthday or anniversary gift). The Coast is generously redirecting the sponsorships back to the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society (which produces the segments), which has been a big help to the Society. If you think you might like to sponsor a week, please e-mail tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca or call 563-1226. Many thanks!

LOT IMPROVEMENTS: Check out the improvements to the small lot at the corner of Victoria Road and Franklin St. This site is owned by the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society, which extends thanks to CBU work-study student Amritpal Singh and the CBU Tompkins Institute. This is also the site of the future Twin City Pocket Park.

PUBLIC HEALTH PROTOCOLS – MASKS STILL STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. Thanks for all your kindness, patience, and co-operation through the pandemic.

COLLECTION FOR JULY 17: $555.00, including $145.00 for the Building Fund. Many thanks, everyone, for your kindness and generosity!

THANKS VERY KINDLY FOR YOUR DONATIONS TO OUR PARISH : We are truly grateful for everyone’s generosity through the pandemic. If you are attending Mass, you will find a collection basket near the entrance and exit (since we are not passing around the basket due to the public health restrictions). Also, please free to use the mail: St. Mary’s Polish Parish, 21 Wesley St., Sydney, NS, B1N 2M5. Donations can also be made securely on-line at Canada Helps (which will email you an instant tax receipt):   https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/st-marys-polish-parish/. (link to this site is provided on our parish website homepage). Thanks for your support!

HEAT PUMPS: Thanks to the heat pumps that were installed a couple of years ago, it should be pleasant and cool in church for Mass! Please take care, everyone, in these very hot conditions.

A NOTE ON ST. ANNE: Mi’kmaq and Polish Catholics share a deep devotion to St. Anne (feast day July 26), grandmother of Jesus. St. Anne has been the patron saint of the Mi'kmaq Nation since 1628, eighteen years after the Mi’kmaq Nation, represented by Grand Chief Membertou, entered into a Concordat (Treaty) with the Holy See. In both Mi'kmaq and Polish traditions, the stories of St. Anne come through a rich oral tradition and not Scripture. In Poland, there are almost 200 churches dedicated to St. Anne. In some parts of the Tarnόw-Rzeszόw region, a candle is often burned on the Tuesday closest to the Feast Day – or even every Tuesday – and prayers for St. Anne’s intercession are requested for people afflicted by poverty. A Polish folk proverb goes like this: "Szczęśliwy kto na świętą Annę wyszuka sobie pannę". It basically means that a couple that first meets on St. Anne’s feast day will be blessed and happy!
