WEEKDAY RADIO SPOTS ABOUT POLISH CULTURE AND LANGUAGE IN CAPE BRETON: The Coast Radio: Every weekday at 3:50pm and 7:50pm (FM 89.7). It’s called the “One Minute Polish Broadcast”. Learn a new Polish word, phrase, or cultural tradition. Presented by the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society. Would you consider sponsoring a whole week of our radio segments for $100? The Coast has kindly agreed to allow the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society to do this as a fund-raiser (they are not charging for air time). Sponsors will be acknowledged on air (IMOs are welcome, birthday tributes, etc). Dziekujemy! And, we’re recruiting volunteers to go on air (pre-recorded). We’ll help you get ready.  ST. CASIMIR
KING OF POLAND, GRAND DUKE OF LITHUANIA
PATRON SAINT OF POLAND AND LITHUANIA

FEAST DAY MARCH 4TH

St. Casimir was born at Wawel, the royal palace in Krakow, in 1458. A member of the Jagiellon Dynasty, he was the third child and the second son of Casimir IV, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, and Queen Elizabeth Habsburg of Hungary.  A Polish priest, Fr. Jan Dlugosz, educated both Casimir and his older brother Vladislaus II.  The priest was a strict and conservative teacher who emphasized ethics, morality, and religious devotion.  When Casimir’s uncle, the King of Hungary and Bohemia, died, Casimir’s father attempted to install his young son as King of Hungary. However, after a lengthy war in Hungary that resulted in defeat, Casimir returned to Krakow to resume his studies with Fr. Dlugosz.  
Fr. Dlugosz remarked that Casimir felt “great sorrow and shame” regarding his failure in Hungary, but Polish propaganda portrayed him as a saviour, sent by divine providence, to protect the Hungarian people from a godless tyrant and pagans.  This seems to have pushed Casimir into a more pious and religious life.  As his brother Vladislaus II ruled Bohemia, Casimir became crown prince and heir apparent to the throne of Poland and Lithuania.  

Casimir’s father tried to arrange a marriage with Kunigunde of Austria, daughter of Emperor Frederick III, but it is claimed that Casimir, sensing his approaching death, refused the arrangement and chose to remain celibate. By 1483, Casimir had developed tuberculosis and joined his father in Vilnius.  There, after the death of the Bishop and Vice-Chancellor of the Crown, Casimir took over some duties in the Chancellery.  However, his health continued to deteriorate. Casimir’s piety, charity, and good deeds were well-known, but he died on 4 March 1484 in Hrodna, Lithuania, at the age of 25.  His remains were interred in Vilnius Cathedral, and he was canonized by Pope Adrian VI in 1522 as the Patron Saint of both Poland and Lithuania. A dedicated Saint Casimir’s Chapel was built in 1636 in Vilnius Cathedral. On 11 June 1948, Pope Pius XII named Saint Casimir the special patron of all youth.
