“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:
March 31: Beniamin, Dobromira, Kornelia
April 1: Grażyna, Katarzyna, Teodora, Tolisław, Zbigniew, Zbyszko
April 2: Franciszek, Sądomir, Władysław, Władysława

OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

CHANGE IN WEDNESDAY MASS TIME FOR THE WINTER MONTHS: 4 p.m.: Our Wednesday evening Mass is at 4 p.m. Novena to Our Lady of Czestochowa follows as usual. Father Paul has effected this change out of consideration for people who may find it difficult to drive in the dark, especially in inclement winter conditions.

TRIDUUM CELEBRATIONS: Thank you to everyone who made this year’s Triduum celebrations so meaningful. We came together on Good Friday for a service rich with symbolism and solemn reflection. Holy Saturday’s traditional blessing of the Easter baskets went very well and was remarked upon in the media. We appreciate the contributions to our parish’s ongoing Sto Darów (100 Gifts) Centenary Community Service Initiative. God bless! Bóg zapłać! WESOLYCH SWIAT WIELKANOCNYCH!

POLISH EASTER BREAKFAST CUSTOMS: The foods that were blessed in baskets on Holy Saturday are consumed on Easter Sunday and on the days following. The breakfast always begins with a prayer (please see the back of the program distributed at yesterday’s blessing for a common Easter-morning prayer). One or more of the eggs are then chopped or sliced and everyone at the table exchanges these pieces, along with greetings and blessings, similar to the Christmas Oplatek.

ST. MARY’S POLISH PARISH EASTER BREAKFAST (ŚWIĘCONKA BREAKFAST) : Sun., April 7, after Mass. Everyone is welcome. Tickets $6.00 available from Toni LaRusic.

FEAST OF DIVINE MERCY: On Sunday, April 7th, at 3pm, Holy Redeemer Parish, Whitney Pier, will be hosting a Divine Mercy celebration.   There will be a special blessing of a new painting of the Divine Mercy.  The Novena to the Divine Mercy begins on Good Friday.  All are welcome to attend. The choir of St. Mary’s Polish Parish will be guests at the celebration, leading in the singing of hymns.

DESIGN WORKSHOP: Thank you to Krista Ann Starzomski for hosting a unique cultural/place-making design workshop with her Grade 8/9 Art students at Whitney Pier Memorial Junior High, in collaboration with Cape Breton University and the Sydney Architectural Conservation Society. The purpose was to plan for the future of a vacant lot on Bryan St. in the Kolonia section of the Pier, close to our church. The lot will be beautified this year in a way that recognizes the area’s rich heritage. Honouring our pioneers and early immigrants to the Pier was a key theme of the workshop. The important role in the community – historically and presently -- of St. Mary’s Polish Church came up frequently in the workshop.

THE RADA DUSZPASTERSKA (Pastoral Council) holds its next meeting on Wednesday, April 3, at 7 p.m. in the O’Connell Parish Centre.

LECTORS’ SCHEDULE:
April 7: Anna Wesolkowska, Edmund Rudiuk
April 14: Elaine Tynski-Shipley, Anne Marie Campbell
April 21: Stephanie Black, Tony Melski

RON AND JOE MELSKI MEMORIAL FAMILY SKATE:  Thank you to those who participated on Tuesday and who contributed non-perishable items as part of our parish’s Sto Darów Centenary Service Initiative. Thank you to the Melski family for taking this on as a community service project.

RENOVATIONS at the Polish Village Hall are progressing well. The hall now has a new ceiling and heat-pump system (which will also cool the hall in the summer). An accessible washroom and ramp are being installed, and improvements to the kitchen and downstairs are also being undertaken. The St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society thanks you for your support.

PLEASE MARK THE FOLLOWING PARISH CENTENARY EVENTS ON YOUR CALENDAR:
Family Reunion, including get-togethers for the whole parish community – August 2-5
Main Centenary Mass and Polish Festival – September 8
Other events are described on our website – www.stmaryspolishparish.ca. There are many activities taking place in honour of our centenary, and more to be announced shortly. If you would like to assist in any way, please speak with any member of the Rada.

POLISH AND ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS OF AN EXCERPT FROM POPE FRANCIS’ HOLY THURSDAY HOMILY AT THE YOUTH PRISON “Casal del Marmo”: To przykład Pana: On jest najważniejszy a umywa nogi, bo między nami ten, który jest najwyższy musi służyć innym.

It is the Lord’s example: He is the most important, and He washes feet, because with us what is highest must be at the service of others. This is a symbol, it is a sign, right? Washing feet means “I am at your service”. And with us too, don’t we have to wash each other’s feet day after day? But what does this mean? That all of us must help one another. Sometimes I am angry with someone or other … but… let it go, let it go, and if he or she asks you a favour, do it.

OPENING EASTER HYMN (March 31, 2013)  -- Wesoły nam dzień dziś nastał

Wesoły nam dzień dziś nastał, (Raise your voices, all creation, )
Którego z nas każdy żądał: (ring the bells of celebration! )
Tego dnia Chrystus zmartwychwstał, (Jesus the Lord has arisen.)
Alleluja, Alleluja! (Alleluia, Alleluia.)

Król niebieski k`nam zawitał,
Jako śliczny kwiat. zakwitał:
Po śmierci się nam pokazał.
Alleluja, Alleluja!

Piekielne moce zwojował,
Nieprzyjaciele podeptał,
Nad nędznymi się zmiłował.

Alleluja, Alleluja!

Do trzeciego dnia tam mieszkał,
Ojce święte tam pocieszał.
Potem iść za sobą kazał.
Alleluja, Alleluja!
