This coming Wednesday – September 8 – is the feast day of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary – the 108th anniversary of our parish! This important time will be featured more in the prayers and bulletin next week

FOOD CUPBOARD: If you are attending Mass this Sunday, we would be so grateful if you could bring a non-perishable or personal care item for the Food Cupboard. In particular, personal care items (soap, shampoo, etc) appear to be especially needed at this time. Also, nutritious non-perishable breakfast items like cereal and peanut butter. HAPPY NOVA SCOTIA POLISH HERITAGE MONTH! Some quick updates:
-Polish take-out meals for Saurday, September 11 have sold out! Many thanks!
-Thanks for the songwriting circle on Friday evening on Zoom! It was a lot of fun and good humour – a chance to work with vivid Polish words and expressions and try creating a hymn – a Polish version of In the Bulb There is a Flower (Hymn of Promise). We even talked about what an extra verse might say. Attendees reflected in a positive and thoughtful way on faith themes and spiritual ideals – about hope and belief, about trust in God, and also about the resilience and solidarity of the Polish people in difficult times and how we could reflect that in words. We also had a quick tutorial on meter and rhyme. Thanks very much to Kasia Jones for her advance work on a first draft, which gave us a superb base!
-EXHIBIT THIS WEEK – Jo-Ann Dziubek MacDonald, featured artist. Please drop by the Polish Village Hall Friday between 4:00pm and 7:00pm, or Saturday between 10:30am and 2:30pm. Jo-Ann has beautiful work, and the exhibit will include Polish folk art! Hosted by Pogoria Polish Folk Ensemble and St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society. Here is Jo-Ann’s description of her exhibit: The exhibit will consist of watercolor and acrylic paintings with a nature-based theme. You can expect to see flowers and forests, blueberries and crows. Mixed media paintings will highlight turn of the century immigrants at the steel plant. Also available to see will be paintings on canvas inspired by wycinanki, the bright and colorful craft of Polish paper cuttings.

-The People’s School episode on CBC Radio Mainstreet Cape Breton this Tuesday at 4:35pm (CBC Radio One) will feature William Kowalski, featured author for this year’s NS Polish Heritage Month.
-Thanks to all the volunteers who were working on pierogi this week! Bless you all!
-We’re delighted to have several restaurants participating in this special month. For example, all Flavor locations are doing a Polish menu item every day inspired directly by our parishioners’ Polish Cape Breton kitchens!

A number of libraries are participating in Nova Scotia Polish Heritage Month. Here are a couple of pictures from the Baddeck Library. They are offering free craft kits as well!

WEEKDAY RADIO SPOTS ABOUT POLISH CULTURE AND LANGUAGE IN CAPE BRETON: The Coast Radio: Every weekday at 3:50pm and 7:50pm (FM 89.7). And archived at coastalradio.ca. It’s called the “One Minute Polish Broadcast”. Learn a new Polish word, phrase, or cultural tradition. Presented by the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society. Would you consider sponsoring a whole week of our radio segments for $100? The Coast has kindly agreed to allow the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society to do this as a fund-raiser (they are not charging for air time). Sponsors will be acknowledged on air (IMOs are welcome, birthday tributes, etc). Dziekujemy! And, we’re recruiting volunteers to go on air (pre-recorded). We’ll help you get ready. No previous experience required, and you do not have to be a Polish speaker. Our radio theme for this coming week will be the work of Jo-Ann Dziubek MacDonald, featured artist for NS Polish Heritage Month. Jo-Ann will be on the segment.

-At selected events, we will have free raffle tickets to win a truly unique gift basket with wonderful books by Polish Nova Scotian authors, including acclaimed novels, cookbooks, history and community development!
-The Good Food Bus (Cape Breton) – nutritious Polish recipe cards and samples of the month’s featured herb – lubczyk (lovage), while supplies last.
-The Coast Radio weekday Polish heritage segments (3:50 and 7:50 p.m.).
-Special NS Polish Heritage Month menu item at all Flavor restaurant locations in Sydney.
-Mahone Bay: The Kitch'Inn B&B is partnering with local restaurants to offer a Polish Getaway Package, which includes a voucher. -Cape Breton University Beaton Institute series of Facebook profiles on unique photos of Cape Breton’s Polish community from the extensive archival collection.
-Halifax Central Library: Polish books display on the 4th floor and “Celebrating Culture” webpage with activities, information, videos, crafts.
-Baddeck Public Library, Cape Breton: Extensive book display, as well as free Polish craft kits and free colouring books while supplies last!
-NSCC Truro Campus Library – month-long feature of Polish Canadian and Polish Nova Scotian authors, coordinated by Principal Lech Krzywonos
-Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron will be flying the Polish flag.

Tuesday, September 21, 2:00pm to 3:30pm: Recipe roundtable at the McConnell Library, Sydney, by recipe contributors to the St. Mary’s Polish Parish Cookbook. Hear some amazing recipe tips! Special reading by William Kowalski from The Best Polish Restaurant in Buffalo. Copies of the St. Mary’s Polish Parish Cookbook will be available.
Thursday, September 23, and Friday, September 24: Craft and cooking workshops with the Whitney Pier Boys and Girls Club (Whitney Pier Youth Club)
Friday, September 24, 10:30am Walking tour of the Kolonia section of Whitney Pier. Meet at the Polish Village Hall, 972 Victoria Road.
Saturday, September 25: Polish Day at the Halifax Central Library. Displays, crafts, 1:00pm to 4:30pm in the Paul O’Regan Hall. Film screening of the acclaimed film “Cold War” (with English subtitles) from 2:00pm to 3:30pm.
Monday, September 27, 6:30pm: Film screening (theme: resistance and conscience) of Andrzej Wajda’s acclaimed film “Man of Marble” (with English subtitles) Boardmore Playhouse, Cape Breton University. A fictional but realistic, fast-paced account of a 1970s journalism student who discovers hidden secrets of the Communist regime.
Wednesday, Sepember 29, at 10:30am: Walking tour: Kolonia section of Whitney Pier and future Twin City Pocket Park – meet at Victoria Road and Franklin St., Whitney Pier.
Wednesday, September 29, 7:30pm: Live virtual tour on Polish immigration experiences, hosted by Pier 21 (Canadian Museum of Immigration). More information to follow on www.PolishMonthNS.ca .
Thursday, Sepember. 30: No activities in order to allow for reflection in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
