Our church is temporarily closed due to the general provincial shutdown to stop the spread of COVID-19. Let’s pray that it won’t be too much longer until we’re back together! Please stay in touch if you need any assistance at all. Please know that your parish is always here to help, or even just available for conversation (902-574-4193). **On Sunday, you’ll be able to find Mass for the Feast of Corpus Christi, celebrated by Father Dennis, here: www.sainttheresasydney.com/

A KIND REQUEST: This coming week, we’re recording another round of radio segments for the weekday Polish-themed segments on The Coast Radio. We’re looking for a few volunteers to lend your voice (we’ll give you a draft script). And we have a few sponsorship opportunities available in the next month as well. ($100 per week – sponsorship is recognized on air – and it can be a gift or a memorial). More information on the radio segments is offered farther down in the bulletin.

HELPING OUR COMMUNITY: The parish’s recent contributions to help the community (please see May 23 bulletin for details) are being put to use by the recipient organizations immediately for the aid of our neighbours, with basic supplies in this time of heightened need. We have been asked to extend expressions of gratitude to our parish.

FOOD CUPBOARD:: Thanks so much for helping to keep our Food Cupboard in front of the Polish Village Hall filled! This is really making a difference in the community.

IN PRAYERFUL SOLIDARITY WITH INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES: We pray for all the precious children, families, and Indigenous communities harmed by the death and human damage in the residential schools. And let us pray that the church will never again be involved in such horrors -- so opposite to the teachings of Jesus. On our parish Facebook page, we joined with the Atlantic Canada District of the Canadian Polish Congress in sharing a resource handout of the Nova Scotia Assembly of Mi’kmaw Chiefs. It provides outreach to non-Indigenous neighbours. It’s about tangible ways in which we can positively be part of reconciliation and building a better future together.

PARISH POLISH COOK BOOKS – SECOND PRINTING! Now available: These are the 100th anniversary cookbooks from 2013, featuring recipes and stories from many parishioners. The cookbook project was coordinated by Shari McKay. Copies are $10 each and we’d be happy to send copies anywhere. Please be in touch: 902-563-1226; tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca

THE POLISH CAPE BRETONERS COLOURING BOOK: Additional copies are available. And once again, we’d be happy to send them anywhere for you. They’re $10 each.

MURAL PROJECT: Dear Friends: Please suggest Polish Cape Breton homes – standing or no longer standing – to feature in a mural project for NS Polish Heritage Month (a project of the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society) – working with artist Emily Sheppard. (contact: 902-563-1226; tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca). Here’s an example of a home that Emily will be sketching.

Above is Jenny Melski’s home in Whitney Pier – one of the homes that Emily is sketching for the mural! We welcome your house/shop photos – to be sketched! Marjorie Ardelli sent along the images below of Julia Ardelli and Peter Mroz’s old store at 125 Henry St. This will also be part of the mural!

NEW WEBSITE FOR POLISH VILLAGE HALL: polishvillage.ca. There’s even a small, secure shop on-line! Some photos and information about the Society are included as well. Please check it out and make suggestions or share photos. We’ll keep improving it!

BULLETINS: If you know someone who is not receiving a bulletin either by e-mail or regular mail, please advise. Happy to make sure they receive a bulletin every week– in one form or another! 902-563-1226; tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca

WEEKDAY RADIO SPOTS ABOUT POLISH CULTURE AND LANGUAGE IN CAPE BRETON: The Coast Radio: Every weekday at 3:50pm and 7:50pm (FM 89.7). And archived at coastalradio.ca. It’s called the “One Minute Polish Broadcast”. Learn a new Polish word, phrase, or cultural tradition. Presented by the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society. Would you consider sponsoring a whole week of our radio segments for $100? The Coast has kindly agreed to allow the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society to do this as a fund-raiser (they are not charging for air time). Sponsors will be acknowledged on air (IMOs are welcome, birthday tributes, etc). Dziekujemy! And, we’re recruiting volunteers to go on air (pre-recorded). We’ll help you get ready. No previous experience required, and you do not have to be a Polish speaker. This is a great way for us to bring forward members of our community, and to promote and share Polish language and culture in our region. Our radio theme for this coming week will be Project Maczek – honouring Polish servicemen who fought alongside Canadians in World War II. Barry Sheehy will be the guest. And thank you to Bob Lewandowski for being this week’s sponsor!

ST. MICHAEL’S POLISH BENEFIT SOCIETY ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING: Sunday evening June 27 at 7:00pm by Zoom. We’ll discuss some exciting long-term “creative-hub” plans for the Polish Village Hall, including a consultant’s report that is currently being drafted (with thanks to ACOA for consultant funding).

MEMBERSHIP IN THE ST. MICHAEL’S POLISH BENEFIT SOCIETY – RENEWALS AND NEW MEMBERS -- A WARM WELCOME: Membership is open to any person of any background with an interest in Polish heritage and culture and who supports the mission and objectives of the Society. It’s the oldest Polish organization of its kind in Canada (founded in 1909!). The membership fee is $30 a year. Monthly meetings are only obligatory for members who have been elected to the board, but all members receive periodic updates, can vote at the Annual General Meeting, and are welcome to participate on projects and working groups as their time permits. You do not have to live in the area to be a member – it’s a way of maintaining a connection and continuing support. For current, members this is also the time of year to renew. Many thanks! You can find an on-line membership form at https://polishvillage.ca/membership-in-the-society/

A PHOTO REQUEST: Do you have some photos from any of last year’s activities for Nova Scotia Polish Heritage Month? We have been asked to submit some photos for a video that the Lieutenant Governor will be doing this year. Please share any photos to: tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca.

THANKS VERY KINDLY FOR YOUR DONATIONS TO OUR PARISH DURING THE SHUTDOWN: We are truly grateful for everyone’s generosity through the pandemic. If you are able to make a donation, the parish’s mailing address is St. Mary’s Polish Parish, 21 Wesley St., Sydney, NS, B1N 2M5. Donations can be made securely on-line at Canada Helps (which will email you an instant tax receipt):   https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/st-marys-polish-parish/. (link to this site is provided on our parish website homepage). Thanks for your support!

REPAIRS TO THE MEDALLION WINDOW ON THE STEEPLE: There has been some water infiltration and early signs of rotting. At its recent meeting on Zoom, the Rada decided to move quickly on this to avoid damage and higher costs down the road.

CAPE BRETON POLISH TARTAN MASKS: A new order will finally be ready on Tuesday! We will send the masks to anyone who previously ordered and has not received one. After that, we will have seven left!

A FIVE-MINUTE POLISH LANGUAGE LESSON FOR BOŻE CIAŁO-CORPUS CHRISTI – and brief explanation of some of our Polish and Catholic customs. This is a short parish Facebook video that was done last year at this time – during our previous shutdown! Here’s a link: https://www.facebook.com/11570187 9073852/videos/2330801467216137
