OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

PLEASE NOTE: Our church is temporarily closed due to the general provincial shutdown to stop the spread of COVID-19. Stay safe, everyone! Please pray for a successful vaccination program and the end of the pandemic.

65th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY! Congratulations to Jancia and Bernie LaRusic! Wishing you 65 more years of happy marriage. God bless! Z Bogiem!

PRAYERS AND CONDOLENCES: Our parish extends its heartfelt condolences to Stephanie Black and her family on the passing of Stephanie’s sister-in-law Janet Black Demers. Janet passed away this week from heart complications. Sadly, Janet’s husband passed away last year from COVID-19. Wieczny odpoczynek racz Jej dać Panie, a światłość wiekuista niechaj Jej świeci. Niech odpoczywa w pokoju wiecznym. Amen

A CARD OF THANKS TO THE PARISH: John and Deanie Morykot sent a beautiful card to express their thanks to fellow parishioners for all the love, support, and prayers following the passing of Raylene Morykot, daughter of John and Deanie. Bόg zapłaƈ.

FOOD CUPBOARD: Before the temporary shutdown, our parishioners have been very generous with the contributions every Sunday to the Food Cupboard (which is in front of the Polish Village Hall). We’d be very grateful to anyone who can stop by the Food Cupboard to help keep it filled. We have received good feedback about how much this is helping in the community

SPECIAL ART PROJECT TO FEATURE “HISTORIC HOMES OF POLISH CAPE BRETON”: Dear Friends: Please suggest Polish Cape Breton homes – standing or no longer standing – to feature in a mural project for NS Polish Heritage Month (a project of the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society) – working with artist Emily Sheppard. (contact: 902-563-1226; tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca)

Above is a sample of Emily’s work. Can you recognize it? (It’s the late Joe Dziubek’s home at the bottom of Bryan St., Whitney Pier) We would like to feature as many of the “Polish homes” as possible. The first step will be a beautiful mural in the Polish Village Hall, to be unveiled during NS Polish Heritage Month.

BULLETINS: If you know someone who is not receiving a bulletin either by e-mail or regular mail, please advise. Happy to make sure they receive a bulletin every week! 902-563-1226; tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca

WEEKDAY RADIO SPOTS ABOUT POLISH CULTURE AND LANGUAGE IN CAPE BRETON: The Coast Radio: Every weekday at 3:50pm and 7:50pm (FM 89.7). And archived at coastalradio.ca. It’s called the “One Minute Polish Broadcast”. Learn a new Polish word, phrase, or cultural tradition. Presented by the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society. Would you consider sponsoring a whole week of our radio segments for $100? The Coast has kindly agreed to allow the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society to do this as a fund-raiser (they are not charging for air time). Sponsors will be acknowledged on air (IMOs are welcome, birthday tributes, etc). Dziekujemy! And, we’re recruiting volunteers to go on air (pre-recorded). We’ll help you get ready. No previous experience required, and you do not have to be a Polish speaker. This is a great way for us to bring forward members of our community, and to promote and share Polish language and culture in our region. Our radio theme for this coming week will be a famous Polish song for May, Witaj Majowa Jutrzenko. Alison Etter will sing a verse of it. This segment is dedicated in honour of Bernie and Jancia LaRusic on their 65th wedding anniversary!

DONATIONS DURING THE SHUTDOWN: We are deeply grateful for everyone’s generosity through the pandemic. If you wish to make a donation, the parish’s mailing address is St. Mary’s Polish Parish, 21 Wesley St., Sydney, NS, B1N 2M5. Donations can be made securely on-line at Canada Helps (which will email you an instant tax receipt):   https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/st-marys-polish-parish/. (link to this site is provided on our parish website homepage). Thanks for your support!

TWIN CITY PROJECT: The St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society, in collaboration with the organizations involved in the Twin City Steering Committee (CBRM and Wałbrzych, Poland), submitted a grant application to the national Healthy Communities Initiative to develop a small Twin City Pocket Park (with design elements linking the two municipalities), designed by students, at the corner of Victoria Road and Franklin St. Unfortunately, we learned this week that this application was not successful due to a very high volume of applications. But we will look for other opportunities! Our counterparts in Wałbrzych are working on a similar project.

APPLICATION DEADLINE JUNE 1: Father Greg MacLeod House seeks residents for year of ‘learning, service, community, faith’: The Father Greg MacLeod House will open in September and is inviting six CBU students to form an ecumenical Christian community. Located in downtown Sydney, the House will provide students with an opportunity for spiritual growth, service, and the practice of Christian hospitality. The students will gather for weekly community nights and work together to serve the community. The house is named for Fr. Greg MacLeod (1935- 2017), priest, professor, and social activist who founded many community businesses and development organizations and believed in the power of ideas and the dignity of all people. Greg MacLeod House is a project of the Newman Society of CBU. CBU students from any Christian background are welcome to apply. Questions? 40th ANNIVERSARY OF THE ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON POPE JOHN PAUL II: There were special prayers throughout Poland on May 13 – many of which reflected on how Pope John Paul demonstrated forgiveness and compassion, not to mention the power of prayer. The Polish Institute of National Remembrance has a page with links to newspapers and radio news items from 40 years ago: https://ipn.gov.pl/pl/aktualnosci/14367 1,40-rocznica-zamachu-na-papieza-JanaPawla-II.html
