OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

PLEASE NOTE: Our church is temporarily closed due to the general provincial shutdown to stop the spread of COVID-19. Stay safe, everyone! Please pray for a successful vaccination program and the end of the pandemic. Our thoughts and prayers are with front-line workers as well

Szczęśliwego Dnia Matki! Happy Mother’s Day!

FOOD CUPBOARD: Our parishioners have been very generous with the contributions every Sunday to the Food Cupboard (which is in front of the Polish Village Hall). We’d be very grateful to anyone who can stop by the Food Cupboard to help keep it filled.

THANKS FOR A WONDERFUL MAY 3rd ON-LINE GATHERING AND LECTURE TO MARK THE FEAST OF MARY, QUEEN OF POLAND AND POLISH CONSTITUTION DAY! We had at least 75 people (58 computers) connected into the gathering! Thanks to guest lecturer Brianne Turczynski. Her lecture was very well received and emphasized the importance of culture, neighbourhood and place. Brianne discussed her book Detroit’s Lost Poletown–including slide presentation. She talked about how people never gave up even when it seemed the struggle was lost. Thank you to Michael Melski for his thoughtful tribute in memory of Melbourne McKay, to whom the event was dedicated. And thanks to members of Melbourne’s family and extended family for their presence. Thank you to Joe Ryba and Bob Lewandowski for instrumental music. Thank you to Jerry Pocius for serving as a “discussant” for the lecture. Thank you to Emily Sheppard for sharing remarks about the Polish houses art project that’s coming up this summer. It was wonderful that we could still be together in this way despite the pandemic. And it was fun, too! God bless (Sincerely, in friendship, Tom and Alison).

SPECIAL ART PROJECT TO FEATURE “HISTORIC HOMES OF POLISH CAPE BRETON”: We’d love to feature a home associated with your family history. Artist Emily Sheppard is working on this project with us this summer.

Above is a sample of Emily’s work. We would like to feature as many of the “Polish homes” as possible. The first step will be a mural in the Polish Village Hall, to be unveiled during NS Polish Heritage Month. If you would like to suggest homes or make a sponsorship ($100 per home – just a pledge at this time – we won’t call in pledges until the mural is actually done) that would be so kindly appreciated! Please call 902-563-1226; tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca

BULLETINS: If you know someone who is not receiving a bulletin either by e-mail or regular mail, please advise. Happy to make sure they receive a bulletin every week! 902-563-1226; tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca

WEEKDAY RADIO SPOTS ABOUT POLISH CULTURE AND LANGUAGE IN CAPE BRETON: The Coast Radio: Every weekday at 3:50pm and 7:50pm (FM 89.7). And archived at coastalradio.ca. It’s called the “One Minute Polish Broadcast”. Learn a new Polish word, phrase, or cultural tradition. Presented by the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society. Would you consider sponsoring a whole week of our radio segments for $100? The Coast has kindly agreed to allow the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society to do this as a fund-raiser (they are not charging for air time). Sponsors will be acknowledged on air (IMOs are welcome, birthday tributes, etc). Dziekujemy! And, we’re recruiting volunteers to go on air (pre-recorded). We’ll help you get ready. No previous experience required, and you do not have to be a Polish speaker. This is a great way for us to bring forward members of our community, and to promote and share Polish language and culture in our region. Our radio theme for this coming week will be the Cape Breton Regional Library’s Polish collection. Guest will be librarian Emily Chasse. This week’s sponsor is Evelyn Wojcik in memory of Walter and Marguerite Wojcik. Last week’s segment was about the May 3rd holiday. Guest voice was Bob Lewandowski. Sponsor was Juliette MacLeod.

DONATIONS DURING THE SHUTDOWN: We are deeply grateful for everyone’s generosity through the pandemic. If you wish to make a donation, the parish’s mailing address is St. Mary’s Polish Parish, 21 Wesley St., Sydney, NS, B1N 2M5. Donations can be made securely on-line at Canada Helps (which will email you an instant tax receipt):   https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/st-marys-polish-parish/. ŚW. STANISŁAW, BISKUP / ST. STANISLAUS (BISHOP), PRINCIPAL PATRON SAINT OF POLAND – FEAST DAY: May 8: On our high altar, we have a figure of St. Stanislaus, a much-loved saint of the Polish people. Ordained as a priest in Krakow, Stanislaw (1030-1079) was very active in promoting the Christian faith in Poland. He established Benedictine monasteries and welcomed papal legates to the country. Stanislaw became critical of King Boleslaw for his cruelty in war and his personal immorality. When the king did not change his ways, despite many appeals, Stanislaw regretfully had him excommunicated. The king then declared the bishop a traitor and ordered him killed. It is said that the king’s soldiers refused the order to kill the bishop, and the murder was committed by the king himself. The murder stirred outrage across Poland, and the veneration of Stanislaw began shortly after his death. He was canonized in 1253 by Pope Innocent IV
