“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:
January 27: Angelika, Ilona, Julian
January 28: Agnieszka, Augustyn, Julian, Karol, Piotr, Radomir
January 29: Hanna, Walerian, Zdzisław

A REQUEST FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE – MATERIAL FOR 100th ANNIVERSARY:
Cape Breton University’s ECECP (East and Central European Communities Project) wishes to borrow media such as cassette recordings, video tapes, and CDs related in any way to Cape Breton’s Polish community. These would be transposed and placed on the project website, following appropriate permissions being obtained. Please contact researcher Patricia Nalepa at ECECP@hotmail.ca or 563-1226 for more information or to donate materials. Anything lent will be digitized by a member of the staff at Cape Breton University; the original hard copy will be returned to the lender. If you would like a copy of the digitized format, please include a USB key or blank CD when sharing materials. A Centenary/Polish Exhibit is planned to be ready for July 1, 2013. Anything contributed would remain part of the exhibit for several months and then returned. These items would not be actually gathered until the week before the opening of the exhibit, but the project wishes to examine and inventory items at this time. Categories include Liturgies, Dance, Music, Embroidery, Cooking, Immigration, Festivals, and Community Milestones and Celebrations. If you have an item or a story that might fit into any of these categories, if you wish to suggest an additional category, or if you wish to lend any items for the exhibit, please contact Patricia Nalepa at ECECP@hotmail.ca (563-1226).

STEUBENVILLE ATLANTIC YOUTH CONFERENCE:
This youth conference weekend, August 2-4, 2013, is held annually at St. F.X. University, Antigonish, and is open to students Grades 9-12. It is sponsored by the Archdiocese of Halifax with the support and encouragement of our own Bishop Dunn. Last summer, almost 800 students from the Atlantic provinces attended and enjoyed themselves immensely. The conference is grounded in our Catholic faith but includes plenty of music and fun. If you are interested in attending, please contact Father Paul at 564-4355. It’s a great way to learn more about your faith and meet many other young people. Registration should take place before the end of March, so please sign up early.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER PLANNING MEETING:
Our parish is asked to send representatives to a meeting of various parishes being held on Thursday, February 7, at 2 p.m. St. Theresa’s Church (in the church). The World Day of Prayer is a longstanding ecumenical laywomen’s initiative. If you can attend, or are considering attending, please speak with Aggie Stephenson

CARDINAL JÓZEF GLEMP, POLAND’S PRIMATE DURING MARTIAL LAW AND THE SOLIDARITY MOVEMENT, DIES:
Cardinal Glemp, the Archbishop Emeritus of Warsaw, passed away on Wednesday. Cardinal Glemp, born in December 1929 in Inowrocław, Kujawia, was appointed Primate of Poland after the death of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński in 1981, a position he held until December 18, 2009.  "He understood that the Church in Poland is always associated with the nation and was committed to that to the end […] The Primate was aware, however, that the Church can never be a substitute for public authorities, political or administrative,” said Archbishop Jozef Kowalczyk. Cardinal Glemp took over as Primate the year martial law was declared by the Communist authorities, and he led the Church through the difficult 1980s as Communism collapsed. “Primate Glemp turned out to be a man full of faith and hope,” Archbishop Kowalczyk said. “He trusted that justice and mutual understanding ultimately prevail. Therefore he undertook the difficult days of martial law and the 1980s calling for mutual understanding, forgiveness and unity.” -Notes from Polskie Radio

150th ANNIVERSARY OF AN EVENT THAT AFFECTED ANCESTORS OF MANY OF OUR PARISHIONERS – AND ACCELERATED EMIGRATION FROM POLAND IN THE DECADES THAT FOLLOWED
: The famous January Uprising (1863) against Czarist occupiers brought together many Poles and Lithuanians in countless cities and towns. The direct cause was forced conscription of Polish youths into the Imperial Russian Army. A provisional government, made up of uprising volunteers, asserted the country’s independence and proclaimed the equality of citizens regardless of creed or class. The uprising was supported by Pope Pius IX. However, the Czar’s forces were much better equipped, and the uprising was turned back (it continued into 1864 in some regions) with many arrests, deportations to Siberia, and executions. There was also widespread confiscation of private property and a policy of repressing Polish cultural symbols and the Polish language. The social and economic hardships in the years that followed contributed to tens of thousands of families seeking refuge or a better life abroad, including in Canada.
