OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

RECENT IMO (IN MEMORY OF) CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE BUILDING FUND:
IMO Michael and Dawn Marie Ardelli from Shirley Ardelli

CONGRATULATIONS to Nicole Baker and Jeffrey MacCormack on your wedding yesterday! Your parish family wishes you many blessings and is here to support you.

POGORIA POLISH FOLK ENSEMBLE: Rehearsal after Mass today in Sala 1050.

INVITATION TO BRING FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES TO CHURCH ON SUNDAY: (the Sunday before the Feast of the Assumption of Mary): We will have baskets set up at the 9:30am Mass to collect any contributions of fresh fruits and vegetables. As we did last year, the fresh produce will be given to Loaves and Fishes. In the Polish tradition, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary is also sometimes called Matka Boska Zielna. Herbs, vegetables, flowers and other plants are blessed in church. This custom would have been especially prevalent in Polish communities at the turn of the 20th century when our parish’s founding families settled in Cape Breton.

WELCOME BACK FR. RICH PHILIPOSKI, who is visiting and will celebrate Mass today. Today’s Mass will be mostly in the Polish language. Usually our Mass is partly in Polish, but when Fr. Rich was pastor we had the additional practice of celebrating Mass mostly in Polish on the first Sunday of the month. We invite everyone to follow along and try the responses. In the book in the pews – Przez Pokolenia: Prayers and Customs of St. Mary’s Polish Church – you will find the Mass in Polish on page 11.
Other key page references: Prayer of Confession (near the start of Mass): page 11
Apostles’ Creed in Polish: page 15.
Fr. Rich will soon be marking the 40th anniversary of his ordination. His letter, which was previously inserted in the bulletin, extending an invitation to join him on September 21 is on the bulletin board near the main entrance.

THE DIOCESAN 175h ANNIVERSARY QUILT: Thanks so much to Brown’s Cresting for their pro bono work and to Peggy Ryba for coordinating!

POP-UP MUSEUM -- “SEARCHING FOR POLISH CAPE BRETON”: The St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society board has decided to make this a separate event from the anniversary supper, as there has been considerable interest. In addition, a group of CBU students will be working with us in the fall. We will designate a November date shortly.

110th ANNIVERSARY SUPPER FOR ST. MICHAEL’S POLISH BENEFIT SOCIETY: Please reserve the evening of September 14. Tickets are $20 each and can be purchased from Tom Urbaniak after Mass.

COMMUNITY KITCHEN: (Wednesday weekly meals): In the first six months of this year, 3,564 meals were served! Thanks to your generous donations, the service is able so far to cover its costs for food, supplies, and some additional equipment. Sincere thanks to volunteers and donors. The Community Kitchen will resume on September 18.

THE POLISH CAPE BRETONERS COLOURING BOOK: Copies ($10) are for sale at the back of the church. If you purchase a copy, please write your name on the sheet to help us keep track of inventory. Many thanks.

A WARM WELCOME TO VISITORS: Please know that you are always welcome here and we would be delighted to give you a tour. Please take a moment to sign the guest book at the back of the church.

TRANSLATION OF TODAY’S FIRST READING FROM ECCLESIASTES: Vanity of vanities, says Qoheleth, vanity of vanities!  All things are vanity! Here is one who has labored with wisdom and knowledge and skill, and yet to another who has not laboured over it, he must leave property. This also is vanity and a great misfortune.  For what profit comes to man from all the toil and anxiety of heart with which he has labored under the sun? All his days sorrow and grief are his occupation; even at night his mind is not at rest. This also is vanity.

TRANSLATION OF TODAY’S SECOND READING FROM PAUL’S LETTER TO THE COLOSSIANS: Brothers and sisters: If you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.  When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory. Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly: immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and the greed that is idolatry. Stop lying to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed, for knowledge, in the image of its creator. Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all and in all.

“The Lord gives each of us a vocation, a challenge to discover the talents and abilities we possess and to put them at the service of others” --A recent message from Pope Francis on Twitter
