NIEDZIELA PALMOWA: SPECIAL FEATURES OF PALM SUNDAY IN THE POLISH TRADITION:  Palm Sunday is very important for the entire Universal Church. It commemorates Jesus’s entry into Jerusalem, an event retold by all four of the biblical Gospels. All solemn Church observances, including Palm Sunday, are major events in Poland. In Poland, palms have long been substituted by willows, posies and by beautifully and colourfully decorated branches of spruce and boxwood. Sometimes, dried flowers from the previous season are attached to the branches. Tissues and ribbons are often used to decorate the palms, making for very impressive processions. Some of the “palms” are many feet high, and some parishes even organize competitions for the making of palms. The palms are not thrown away but are often put in window sills and below sacred images as a symbol of our prayers for protection. “See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” Zechariah 9:9.
