OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

PARISH OPŁATEK POTLUCK: Today, January 13 at 1:00pm in the Polish Village Hall. Everyone is welcome. There is no charge, but if you can please bring a dish and a non-perishable item for Loaves and Fishes. We will exchange the traditional Polish Christmas wafer, enjoy fellowship and kolędy to mark the end of the Christmas season, reflect on the year ahead, and extend blessings to each other. It is a longstanding Polish custom for parishes to hold Opłatek gatherings in January as a continuation of faithful community connection and hospitality. Fr. Rich Philiposki is visiting today and will be with us at the Opłatek.

WITAMY, Fr. Rich! Welcome to former pastor Fr. Rich Philiposki who is visiting for a few days and will join us today for Mass and the Opłatek potuck gathering and meal at 1:00pm at the Polish Village Hall. See you there!

REQUEST FOR PHOTOS AT TODAY’S OPŁATEK POTLUCK: The diocese has asked for some photos for their newsletter or Facebook. We’d be grateful if some parishioners could take photos on their phone or camera and send them to tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca . Thanks so much!

DZIĘKUJEMY! The signing ceremony for the Partner City Agreement between Walbrzych, Poland and the Cape Breton Regional Municipality was amazing. Both mayors were linked in via live video feed. On our side, the event took place at Whitney Pier Memorial Middle School with the participation of Krista Ann Starzomski’s students plus representatives of various institutions and organizations. Our parish and the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society are delighted to be involved in this, and there are many opportunities for projects, exchanges, and cooperation. If you’d like to be involved in any way, please don’t hesitate to speak with Tom Urbaniak.

CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS will be taken down tomorrow morning. We’ll announce the time at the Opłatek potluck this afternoon. Thanks so much to anyone who can assist.

WHITNEY PIER COMMUNITY KITCHEN PROJECT: Meals are served every Wednesday from 11:30am to 1:00pm in our Sala 1050 (collaboration with other faith communities and organizations). Everyone is welcome for a good meal and friendly fellowship. Meals are free; any donations are gratefully received. Thanks to all the volunteers and sponsors. Anyone wishing to volunteer periodically or regularly, please call 563-1226. Many thanks.

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY : January 18-25, 2019. The following is from the official Canadian website for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (weekofprayer.ca): “The theme for the 2019 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity comes to us from Indonesia: ‘Justice, and only justice, you shall pursue’ (Deuteronomy 16:18-20).The 2019 theme calls us to move from shared prayer to shared action. Drawing on the traditional values of Bhineka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity) and gotong royong (living in solidarity and by collaboration), Indonesian Christians invite us to be a united witness, and an agent of Christ’s healing grace in a broken world, by making specific commitments to justice, equality, and unity.

TRANSLATION OF TODAY’S SECOND READING (From the letter of St. Paul to Titus): Beloved: The grace of God has appeared, saving all and training us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live temperately, justly, and devoutly in this age, as we await the blessed hope, the appearance of the glory of our great God and saviour Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to deliver us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people as his own, eager to do what is good. When the kindness and generous love of God our saviour appeared, not because of any righteous deeds we had done but because of his mercy, He saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he richly poured out on us through Jesus Christ our saviour, so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life.

“The first step in prayer is to be humble, go to the Father and say: “Look at me, I am a sinner.” And the Lord listens.” – A recent message on Twitter from Pope Francis
