OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

SOLIDARITY WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE UNEMPLOYED: As a parish, we all feel solidarity with the employees of Servicom who abruptly lost their jobs on Thursday (with back wages unpaid). There is an increased need in our community for non-food daily staple items like soap, shampoo, toilet paper, facial tissues, laundry detergent, etc. When we do our non-perishable food collections, any such items will also be gratefully accepted in the same boxes. We will give these to Loaves and Fishes and to the Salvation Army, which presently has the most organized system for assisting families experiencing unemployment. In addition to today, we will have the non-perishable/daily-staple collection boxes near the entrances to the church each Sunday and Wednesday for anyone who wishes to contribute. Thank you and God bless.

LUNCH AFTER MASS TODAY: Everyone is welcome. There is no charge. We will have the visit of Święty Mikołaj (St. Nicholas). He will bring small presents for the children. There will be a brief explanation of some of the Polish traditions related to the feast day of St. Nicholas (Dec. 6).

POLISH RELIGIOUS CHRISTMAS CARDS ($2 each) and OPŁATEK ($3 per envelope) are available at the back of the church (proceeds to support the work of the parish). Please note that we are almost out of our supply, but we should have more next week. If there are particular cards you like, please let Tom Urbaniak know (he will be in Toronto for a meeting mid-week).

CAPE BRETON POLISH TARTAN ANGEL ORNAMENTS: A limited supply. These have been made by volunteers and are selling for $10 (proceeds to support the work of the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society). Thank you to Maura Lea Morykot for donating the materials. They will be on sale at the lunch after Mass today.

WHITNEY PIER COMMUNITY KITCHEN PROJECT: Meals are served here every Wednesday from 11:30am to1:00pm. Free of charge or donate what you can. Everyone is welcome. The Community Kitchen Project has been going very well.

OFFER OF A FREE REFRIGERATOR: We recently replaced one of our refrigerators. If anyone would like the old one (it’s at the back of the Sala 1050, near the back door), please speak with John Morykot or any member of the Rada. If there is more than one expression of interest today, we’ll draw for it!

NEW YEAR’S EVE AT THE POLISH VILLAGE HALL: DJ Robin Krszwda. Tickets are $15 and will be available today during the lunch after Mass.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT: Next Sunday, December 16, at 3:00pm at St. Philip's African Orthodox Church. Everyone is welcome. Our Pogoria Polish Folk Ensemble has been invited to sing Polish carols.

DZIEŃ ŚWIĘTEGO MIKOŁAJA / ST. NICHOLAS DAY (DEC. 6): In Poland, Swiety Mikolaj (St. Nicholas) normally visits homes to leave gifts during the night of December 5-6. Among Cape Bretoners who are connected to the Polish heritage, this sometimes happens but it has been more common over the years to have St. Nicholas visit our church or hall on or close to the feast day. St. Nicholas will be in his bishop’s clothing when he visits us because, in the 4th century, he was the kind-hearted and generous Bishop of Myra, in present-day Turkey. St. Nicholas is often accompanied by an angel when he visits. He sometimes asks Catechism questions. Swiety Mikolaj will join us at the lunch after Mass today. Let us all extend to him a warm welcome!

DECEMBER 8: FEAST OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF MARY: In Poland and other countries with deep Catholic traditions, it is often marked as a family day.

TRANSLATION OF TODAY’S SECOND READING FROM 1 PHIL.4-6,8-11: Brothers and sisters: I pray always with joy in my every prayer for all of you, because of your partnership for the gospel  from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus. God is my witness,  how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer: that your love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern what is of value, so that you may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness  that comes through Jesus Christ.
for the glory and praise of God.

“Loving God means serving our neighbour without reserve, and trying to forgive without limits.” – A recent message on Twitter from Pope Francis
