THE PARUCH COLLECTION AT CBU: Jerry Pocius is working with Bernie Paruch interviewing Stella Paruch about her experiences of living in Whitney Pier. Jerry is also interested in Johnny Paruch and his polka music (see Bulletin insert). Stella has donated a collection of photos, cards, LP and 78 records, as well as other materials about her family to the Beaton Institute Archives at CBU. If anyone has photos, records (including wedding films, etc.) of Johnny’s performances, please contact Jerry.

THIRD DRAFT OF DONORS’ LIST FOR REBUILDING: Please see the binders at the back of the church and note omissions and corrections. Thanks for all the help to date, including corrections of spelling and IMOs! We’re getting there!

LOAVES AND FISHES: Request for some fresh vegetables, including carrots, lettuce, etc. (in addition to our usual non-perishable contributions). If you can assist with this, please speak with Bernie Paruch or Jerry Pocius.

COMMUNITY KITCHEN PROJECT UPDATE: Norm Hubbert is working for 20 weeks as a community development officer (remunerated by the province’s JCP program, supervised by CBU). Part of Norm’s work is helping the steering committee to get the community kitchen up and running. The community kitchen will run Wednesday afternoons starting on September 26 (six-month pilot). You will sometimes notice Norm working in the O’Connell House (glebe house).  There is a sponsorship letter with an invitation to share it with anyone who might consider sponsoring the weekly meal for $250. PLEASE MARK SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, ON YOUR CALENDAR: We are planning a lunch and workshop to coincide with the creation of the Atlantic Canada district of the Canadian Polish Congress, which will be based in Sydney. Wladyslaw Lizon, the national president of the Canadian Polish Congress, will be here.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Cancer Centre Lunch Program, Cape Breton Regional Hospital: Program requires a commitment of only one morning a month. Volunteers prepare a tea cart with sweets, coffee, tea and juice and serve it to those waiting to receive their treatments.  Program is normally held on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  If interested, please call Stasia Digou at 902- 562-1367 or email stasiadigou@hotmail.com for further information.

TRANSLATION OF TODAY’S FIRST READING (Jer. 23: 1-6): “Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!” says the Lord. Therefore, thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: It is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. “So I will attend to you for your evil doings,” says the Lord. “Then I myself will gather the remnants of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any longer, or be dismayed, nor shall any be missing,” says the Lord. “The days are surely coming,” says the Lord, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’”

FEAST OF ST. JAMES, JULY 25: St. James (known as the Greater in order to distinguish him from the other Apostle St. James, our Lord's cousin) was St. John's brother. With Peter and John he was one of the witnesses of the Transfiguration, as later he was also of the agony in the garden. He was beheaded in Jerusalem in 42 or 43 on the orders of Herod Agrippa. Since the ninth century, Spain has claimed the honour of possessing his relics, though it must be said that actual proof is far less in evidence than the devoution of the faithful. The pilgrimage to St. James of Compostella in the Middle Ages attracted immense crowds; after the pilgrimage to Rome or the Holy Land, it was the most famous and the most frequented pilgrimage in Christendom. The pilgrim paths to Compostella form a network over Europe; they are dotted with pilgrims' hospices and chapels, some of which still exist.
