OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

FATHER RICH REPORTS:
Niech Bedzie Pochwalony Jezus Chrystus! Praise be Jesus Christ!
Dear Parishioners & Friends:
Today, on this Fifth Sunday in ordinary time, we have but one full week and only 10 days from the beginning of holy penitential season of Lent. Ash Wednesday will be on Wednesday, February 14. Yesterday, we observed the memorial of Saint Blaise, Bishop and Martyr from Armenia. A centuries’-old Catholic tradition is the blessing of throats on this day (and usually the weekend after). Today's Mass will conclude with the invitation to come forward and receive the blessing with the two blessed candles. The blessing prayer asks God through the intercession of St. Blaise to deliver us from all afflictions of the throat and all evil. This Monday, I am scheduled (weather allowing) to fly to Florida where priests of the Society of Christ from the North American Province will gather for their study days conference. It is likely that it will be decided where my assignment will be after July 1st. I will again present the case for return of my order to the parishes of St. Anthony/St. Faustina in Dartmouth and St. Mary’s here in Sydney. Please pray for that intention!
I am happy to announce that our parish will again sponsor the TV Mass for Shut- Ins on Sunday, March 18th. We will pre-tape the Mass on Tuesday (March 13th) beginning at 6:00pm. We will be able to provide two readers, two altar servers, a reader to present the intercessions, two gift bearers, choir and audience congregation.
Thanks to all who came to the Friday Candlemas as well as “Polski Piątek” and all those who assisted with the first Saturday Mass and reception.
May all have a blessed week!

WELCOME TO INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS: This past September and January, CBU has welcomed a particularly high number of new international students. Here at St. Mary’s, we have been delighted to have with us several students from India at various Masses and most recently at Friday’s Polski Piątek. To students who are new to Cape Breton, we are glad you are here! Please don’t hesitate to speak with any member of the parish if there is any help or advice that will make things easier for you. We’re blessed to have you with us, and please know that you can always feel at home here.

A SPECIAL REQUEST FOR THE WORLD DAY OF PRAYER, ANNUAL ECUMENICAL WOMEN'S GATHERING: Our parish has been requested to be represented by a reader.  Meeting for service preparation: February 9th 2:00pm at Westmount United Church. The hall has recently gone through some major improvements. Thanks for your help in promoting the hall as a hub for the community. Please speak with any member of the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society or call 902-564-8494.

“THE POLISH CAPE BRETONERS”: A COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT COLOURING BOOK PROJECT: (A project of CBU’S Tompkins Institute, in consultation with our parish and the Polish community). In the January 21st bulletin, the insert had a list of possible living sites and traditions to be featured and described in Polish and English. This colouring book will be a guide to both visitors and residents. Feedback and suggestions are kindly encouraged. There is a copy of this insert on the bulletin board near the main entrance.

Święty Błażej / St. Blaise was murdered in 316 for his devotion as a Christian leader. He was a caring physician who became a priest and bishop. He lived a very modest life helping others. Through intense prayer, he interceded for miracles of healing, feeling compassion for everyone who was sick. At least once, he rescued a child who was choking, which is why his intercession is sought for the blessing of throats. His image often shows him holding two crossed candles as he offers a blessing. He is also the patron saint of Dubrovnik, Croatia, where major celebrations are organized on February 3.

A RECENT MESSAGE ON TWITTER FROM THE HOLY FATHER:“A faith that does not trouble us is a troubled faith. A faith that does not make us grow is a faith that needs to grow.”
