Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. OGŁOSZENIA/ANNOUNCEMENTS
CATECHISM/POLISH CULTURAL CLASSES commence today, right after Mass, here in the church (downstairs) for school-age children. Please advise Krista Ann Starzomski if your children are interested in participating. The gatherings will be 30-45 minutes long. Please feel free to speak with Krista Ann after Mass or contact her by e-mail or telephone (kristastarzomski@gmail.com; 539-2219).
NEXT SUNDAY: A SPECIAL BLESSING FOR ALL SOULS DAY: Please bring to Mass (to be placed on the altar steps) any wreaths, flowers, or candles that you intend to take to gravesides in remembrance of loved ones. At Mass next Sunday (October 28), we will reflect on the upcoming All Souls Day and pray for eternal rest for our relatives, friends, and for those who do not have loved ones to remember them. Please bring to Mass, for a special blessing, any wreaths, flowers, or candles that you are planning to take to gravesides. These can be placed during the Mass on the altar steps. If you will not be able to make it to the cemetery where your family members are buried, please feel free to leave flowers in the church in their memory. All Saints Day and All Souls Day are very important in the Church and are major holidays in Poland: Virtually everything stops as people return to their hometowns and family burial places. On Friday, November 2, there will be a special All Souls Day Mass here in our church at 12:15 p.m. (Our neighbouring parish, Holy Redeemer, will have Mass that day at 9 a.m. in the convent and at 6:30 p.m. in the church)
REMINDER: Short meeting after Mass next Sunday (Oct. 28), for all parishioners, to consider ratification of the By-laws for the Rada and committees.The proposed By-laws were submitted to the parish in draft form by the Ad hoc Committee on Parish Statutes and Policies on September 16 (following review by Father Paul and by Father John Barry, judicial vicar). ST. MARY’S POLISH PARISH MASS FOR SHUT-INS: Our parish will be recording the televised Mass for Shut-Ins on TUES., NOV. 20: We are asked to assemble at the television station at 6 p.m. for taping at 6:30 p.m. The Mass will be broadcast the following Sunday for the Feast of Christ the King (Uroczystość Jezusa Chrystusa, Króla Wszechświata). Father Paul has requested that those of us who have traditional attire or St. Michael’s suits wear them for this recording. Thank you, in advance, for your participation.
THE NEWEST CANADIAN ABORIGINAL SAINT, KATERI TEKAKWITHA: St. Kateri (1656-1680) was descended from Mohawk and Algonquin ancestors and grew up in the Mohawk nation near Montreal. She lived at a time of profound instability for her people, who were ravaged by smallpox epidemics that claimed the lives of Kateri’s parents and brother. She herself was permanently scarred by smallpox. Meanwhile, the Mohawk nation was caught in the middle of conflicts between European powers. In light of these difficulties, Kateri, who adopted her mother’s Catholic faith, advocated solidarity with the needy, prayer, and a regimen of great service and self-denial.
REFLECTING ON THE WATERSHED SECOND VATICAN COUNCIL 50 YEARS AFTER ITS OPENING: The following is an excerpt from a recent guide published by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops: When Vatican II is discussed today, this discussion usually centres on the Church, particularly the documents Lumen Gentium (On the Church) and Gaudium et Spes (on the Church in the Modern World). As a Canadian participant in the Council, the Archbishop of Halifax James Hayes, pointed out, “the whole purpose of the Council was to help us realize and understand what the Church really is.” Vatican II has given us a fresh understanding [on] how we become holy, how we can be saved, and how we see other[s] ...
While recognizing the numerous traditional images and metaphors for the Church, Vatican II gave new emphasis to that of the Church as the People of God. By emphasizing this image, the Council wanted to bring out more clearly the fact that, while the Church is united with Christ, it is not identical with him; it is also composed of people who “belong to or are related to it in various ways” (e.g., Catholics, other Christians, etc.). It also exists in history, as a pilgrim on the way to the kingdom of God. The advantage of speaking of the Church as a people is that it highlights the fact that the Church is not Christ and is not yet perfect. The opening line of the Constitution on the Church sums this up perfectly: “Christ is the light of nations … a light brightly visible on the countenance of the Church.” In other words, the Church is not itself the light, but its mission is to reflect the light of Christ. This vision helps the Church remain humble, avoiding arrogant triumphalism.

THE OLDEST KNOWN POLISH SPIRITUAL HYMN -- BOGURODZICA
This hymn may date to as early as the 10th century. It became the first Polish anthem and was sung at the coronation of kings.
