“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:
September 2: Bohdan, Czesław, Eliza, Henryk, Julian, Stefan, Tobiasz
September 3: Antoni, Bartłomiej, Bronisław, Izabela, Jan, Joachim, Szymon (Simon), Wincenty, Zenon

OGŁOSZENIA/ANNOUNCEMENTS

POLISH SUNDAY: PLEASE NOTE that there will be no lunch following Mass today due to preparations for our festival on September 9. Thank you for everyone’s assistance!

NEXT SUNDAY: 99th ANNIVERSARY MASS FOLLOWED BY POLISH FESTIVAL AT OUR PARISH!
If you have traditional Polish attire or a St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society suit, you are invited to wear it to Mass next Sunday. We will all receive a special blessing.  Following Mass, there will be a presentation and discussion of archival photos led by CBU researchers Patricia and Justin Nalepa.  A historical tour will follow. Polish dinners will be served around noon, followed by outdoor cultural performances, children’s games, a raffle with traditional crafts, a beer garden serving Polish beer, and more. Please invite friends in the broader community to join us. There is no admission charge.

SPECIAL THANKS to Simon Gillis, a longtime friend of St. Mary’s Polish Parish, for repairing the statue of St. Stanislaus of Krakow (not to be confused with St. Stanislaus Kostka) on our altar last Sunday.

PAINTING OF THE FOUNDATION:  In the August 19th bulletin, the Interim Finance Committee (Chair Andrzej Cebula, Shauna McKay, Paul Tynski, Edmund Rudiuk, Jola Cebula, Janusz Wawrzyszyn) reported on a property review, which found the building in overall good repair but which identified two issues for immediate attention: the roof on the one-storey back extension and the need to repair some superficial defects in the foundation to prevent moisture seepage and more serious problems in the near future.  The foundation work will also include a repaint, which can be done largely by volunteers. Weather-permitting, we would like to undertake the work in the next several days in order to have it refreshed for the festival. Can you spare a few hours this week? We would be very, very grateful for any assistance. If you are able to assist, please speak with a member of the Property Working Group (Catherine Tucker, Herb Tucker, Paul Tynski, or Tom Urbaniak) or call 563-1226. Thank you!  The current foundation paint colour is no longer commercially available. It is proposed to use Oxford brown, which is darker than the current colour but which would provide a compatible contrast to the siding. If you would like to propose another colour, please speak with a member of the Property Working Group before 3 p.m. today.

VISITORS TO OUR CHURCH:  Witamy! Welcome! We would be happy to show you this sacred, historic place – Atlantic Canada’s only Polish church -- and we can also arrange more formal tours upon request. Please sign our guest book at the back of the church, and we invite you to take a pamphlet summarizing our history. In the pamphlet is a tear-off form to provide your e-mail address or contact information to receive information about our future events. Our home is your home, and you are always welcome at St. Mary’s Polish Church.

100th ANNIVERSARY FAMILY REUNIONS:  Civic Holiday weekend, 2013 (August 3-5). Please mark your calendars now!

PILGRIMAGE TO MEDJUGORJE: Father Patrick O'Neill is leading a pilgrimage to Medjugorje, October 22nd to 31st. For more information and booking, call Anna Sampson at 226-2852.

ROK WIARY/YEAR OF FAITH TO BEGIN OCTOBER 11:  Pope Benedict XVI has proclaimed a “Year of Faith” (rok wiary in Polish) with recommendations and guidance for the entire Church. The start date of October 11 coincides with the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council.  Recommendations for local parishes include a distribution of, and greater familiarity with, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and the organization of parish missions – where parishioners gather, often with special guests respected for their spiritual leadership, to renew and discuss their faith, to learn more about it, and to discuss how they can be role models of dignity and goodness in an often troubled world.  With St. Mary’s Polish Parish celebrating its 100th anniversary next year, we can participate in a special way in the Year of Faith. Please refer to our parish’s Planning Team update, distributed on July 15, and please do not hesitate to convey any additional recommendations to any member of our Planning Team.

FALL SERIES ON CATHOLICISM:  Beginning Thursday, October 18, 6:30pm, Holy Redeemer Parish, Whitney Pier, will host a 10-session DVD programme on the beauty, history, and teachings of our Catholic Faith. This programme, devised by Father Robert Barron, author, speaker, and theologian, is aimed at helping adult Catholics come to understand better the beauty of their heritage and Faith. Used in many other parishes throughout Canada and the US, this programme has been acclaimed as an effective adult religious education tool. Father Paul Murphy will be the facilitator. Just in time for the opening of the ‘Year of Faith’ as proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI, this programme should serve as a great help for those wishing to understand the truths of our Faith. Please mark the date in your calendars and consider participating.

ST. STANISLAUS KOSTKA (1550-1568):  Born in Rostkowo, Poland, St. Stanislaus was renowned for his unshakeable spiritual devotion, even when taunted by critics and when overcome by excruciating illness.  He pursued his vocation as a novice in the Society of Jesus and remained stoic, studious, cheerful, and charitable despite constant adversity. Upon his death, it was already predicted far and wide that he would be a saint. He was beatified in 1605 and canonized in 1726.

BLESSINGS FOR A NEW SCHOOL YEAR: The following is an excerpt from a pastoral letter from the Polish bishops being read today in all Catholic churches in Poland:
“Czas ten jest zarówno zadaniem, jak i szansą, którą należy dobrze wykorzystać. Dotyczy to zwłaszcza was drogie dzieci i kochana młodzieży, jak i rodziców, wychowawców oraz duszpasterzy. Dla was wszystkich chcemy prosić Pana Boga o potrzebne łaski.”

“This time represents both a responsibility and an opportunity that we can put to good use. This applies especially to the children and youth of our community, as well as parents, educators and pastors. For all of you, we ask God for His much-needed grace and blessings.”
