“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:
September 28: Jan, Luba, Lubosza, Marek, Nikita, Sylwin, Wacław, Wacława, Więcesław
September 29: Michał, Rafał, Gabriel

ŚWIĘTY MICHAŁ ARCHANIOŁ, MÓDL SIĘ ZA NAMI! St. Michael the Archangel has several important roles:
- He is the leader of Heaven’s triumph over hell.
- He intercedes to redeem souls at the hour of death.
- He weighs virtue on a perfectly balanced scale.
- He is a guardian of the Church.

St. Michael is the patron saint of, among others: people who are ill or dying, paramedics, radiologists, danger at sea, mariners, artists, bankers, police officers, soldiers, and security guards – and of course our St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society. He is often depicted confronting a serpent, as he is in the classic painting in our sanctuary (beside the stairs to the choir). In another famous image, he is seen with Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

The St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society meets this evening at 7 p.m.

75th ANNIVERSARY OF THE FORMATION OF THE POLISH UNDERGROUND STATE (maintaining dignity and humanity in the face of occupation): Archbishop Stanislaw Gadecki, head of the Polish Conference of Catholic Bishops, invited churches to remember in their prayers today these courageous citizens. When Poland came under occupation, they tried to maintain, underground, the features of a normal society, including faith groups, schools, universities, courier services, etc. They worked to rescue victims of the occupiers and to help prisoners escape.

THE WORLD KNEW: Jan Karski’s Mission for Humanity. This travelling exhibit will be up another week at CBU (main hallway – Great Hall entrance toward the cafeteria). OUR OPENING HYMN TODAY:
KSIĄŻE NIEBIESKI, ŚWIĘTY MICHALE

The origins of this hymn are obscure, but it has often been sung in our church on September 29 (Feast of St. Michael the Archangel) or the Sunday closest.

Książę niebieski, święty Michale,
Ty sprawy ludzkie kładziesz na szale;
W dzień sądu Boga na trybunale
Bądź mi Patronem, święty Michale.

Za Protektora bądź i Patrona,
Niech mnie wspomoże Twoja obrona;
Uśmierz czartowską zuchwałość srogą,
Bądź przewodnikiem, bądź mi i drogą

Prince of Heaven, St. Michael,
You place human affairs on woven scarves;
On the day of God’s judgment, on that holy tribune.
Be my patron, St. Michael.

Be my Protector and my Patron,
Let me be helped by your protection;
Smother and relieve the sinister, fierce audacity,
Be my guide, and be for me the way.

Wrzesień/September 2014

Szanowni Państwo / Dear Friends:

RE: SPONSORING BUNDLES OF SHINGLES FOR THE NEW ROOF
St. Mary’s Polish Parish is in the middle of a major fund-raising campaign so that we can complete a much-needed new roof in the very near future. Total costs will be approximately $40,000.

We are proud to be stewards not only of a beautiful historic landmark (a protected heritage property, with a rare designation from the Province of Nova Scotia) but a vibrant and welcoming place of faith with a special sense of community and distinctive customs that we are blessed to share with everyone.

As one of our fund-raising efforts, we are inviting parishioners and friends of the parish to sponsor bundles of shingles at $25 per bundle. If you wish, you can sponsor the bundles in memory of a loved one.  Names of sponsors (and IMO names, if applicable) will be listed on a permanent plaque in the church.

Please feel free to use the Roof Fund envelopes, which can be deposited into the Sunday collection or mailed to the parish. Charitable tax receipts will be provided (at the same time as general collection tax receipts, in February or early March).

Thank you kindly for any support you can give to this important collective effort. May God bless you and your families.

Bóg zapłać!           ------ Rada Duszpasterska (Parish Council) of St. Mary’s Polish Church
