“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:

HONOURING THE BLESSED MARTYRS OF NOWOGRODEK: Friday is the feast day for the 11 beatified Sisters of the Family of Nazareth who are being considered for sainthood. They helped the people of Nowogrodek, Poland (now in Belarus), maintain their dignity in the face of Soviet and then Nazi occupation during World War II. In 1942, the Nazis in the area (as elsewhere) began murdering most of the Jewish Poles and many of the Christian Poles. After their pleas to end the killing were ignored, the Sisters offered their own lives in exchange for a group of 60 arrested people. The Nazis released the prisoners and some time later arrested the sisters and had them killed. Through the intercession of the blessed martyrs of Nowogrodek, we pray for an end to all war, brutality, and oppression.
